My kids inherited my fair complexion and propensity to burn, rather than tan. I am very diligent with applying sunscreen on them whenever we go out in the sun in order to protect their skin from early signs of aging and skin cancer. What I sometimes forget is that a regular T-shirt does not block out all of the sun’s harmful rays. Sure, it’s way better than going out without anything at all. But when it comes to my kids’ skin, it’s best to consider all your options before you head outdoors.
Here are some important sun protection facts (provided by K & J):
- One blistering sunburn or five non-blistering sunburns in childhood doubles the lifetime risk of melanoma.
- To protect your child from skin cancer sun protection must begin at birth and occur daily, not just at the beach or pool.
- Standard cotton t-shirts do not provide adequate protection from the sun.
- Babies under six months of age are advised to wear limited amounts of sunscreen.
K & J is a line of sunprotective clothing that is rated at UPF 50+, blocking out 99% of the sun’s harmful rays. I love K & J’s simple, but cute graphics on their T’s. We reviewed le papillon in yellow on a recent outing to Disneyland…in the sun, all day long. Kieran’s middle name is French, and I love integrating some of this influence in her daily life, whether it’s with decorations in her room or in her clothing. When I came across K & J Sunprotective Clothing-I found the best of both worlds-cute graphics in a functional shirt.
Kieran is tall for her age, currently at 44″ and weighs 39 pounds. She is in a K & J 5T. The t-shirt is a medium-weight cotton. The graphic on the t-shirt holds up well to several washings (ours has been washed 5 times now). There is no wear evident to the screen-printed design and the yellow seems vibrant as ever. This traditional t-shirt neckline is available in sizes 2T-6T.
I think the Gray Rebel Infant Tee would be perfect for Brendan. He is definitely my wild one! I love that the style is different on the infant tees, having the wider neck style as these do makes getting shirts on little ones so much easier! This neckline is available on shirt sizes 0-24 months.
K & J Sunprotective Clothing was created by a Dermatologist Mom. Their shirts are 100% cotton and rated at UPF 50+. They are chemical-free and tagless, making them a great option for kids with eczema and sensitive skin.

perfect for sunny days at the park! i like the “dig it” and “old school” ones, perfect for my boys.
These are great! My son and I both have very fair skin and I try to protect him from the sun as much as possible. I slather him with sunscreen every day, but I only put it on the parts of his body that are exposed to the sun. This is a great reminder that regular clothes do not provide adequate protection from the sun. I love that these clothes have UV protection and more multi-purpose than rash guards.
