Bong Joon-Ho‘s Parasite has earned some well-deserved acolytes during this awards season run and was expected to win some extra gold during the Academy Awards. But not only was the Korean film was the first to win the newly christened Best International Film, but it also won Best Picture, making it the first non-English language speaking film to do so in its 92-year run. Joon-Ho also took home awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director.
There were no surprises on the performance side of things. Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt, and Laura Dern were all the odds-on favorite to win their respective awards. Phoenix won Best Actor for his performance in Joker. Renée Zellweger took home the Best Actress award for her performance in Judy. Meanwhile, Pitt snagged the BestActor In A Supporting Role Award for his role in Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood, and Dern won the award for Best Actress In A Supporting Role for her role in A Marriage Story.
Other notable wins include Roger Deakins, who won his second Academy Award for Best Cinematography in the World War I epic 1917. Rocketman‘s “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” would help Elton John win his second Academy Award.
