Pink, pink is everywhere this month! From the uniforms on NFL players to the lights atop the Empire State Building, everyone is on board to recognize breast cancer awareness.
As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, taking part in building awareness is very important to me. This week I had the opportunity to bring my mom to a very special luncheon, organized by The MOMs and sponsored by MARTINI sparkling wine, in NYC.
It was inspiring to hear how a really awful disease could inspire such acts of courage and allow women and their loved ones to help themselves and ultimately other women along the way.
Highlights of the luncheon speakers for me were…
* When Elizabeth Chabner Thompson, MD, MPH, told her story her family’s strong history with breast cancer, her experiences as a Radiation Oncologist and her inspiration for creating BFFL Co., Best Friends for Life, which creates bags filled with all the items needed to make hospital visits as easy as possible for women going through mastectomies and other surgeries.
* Listening to Dee Dee Ricks, a patient advocate who’s been named among Wall Street’s Most Powerful Women, speak about how her own cancer diagnosis led her to participate in a documentary following her treatment and subsequently becoming an advocate for fairer healthcare practices for women of all economic levels.
* Hearing Tony Award-nominated actress, Kristin Chenowoth, talk about taking putting her career on hold and taking time off to care for her sick mother as she battled breast cancer several years ago.
At the close of the event, MARTINI presented Kristin with a $10,000 to her charity to be used to benefit breast cancer survivors.
It was a fun and truly inspiring event that I was happy to share with my personal hero and survivor, my mom.
That’s IT Mom, Jill
