Sequels are a part of the norm for any successful franchise. While some take a great deal of time to write, film, and release, some comes at us rather quickly. This is especially true for “Sonic 2.” Unlike some of the bigger tentpoles that were affected by the pandemic, the time between “Sonic” and “Sonic 2’s” release is rather short. Of course, that might have to do with how much the film relies on CG characters. Still, “Sonic” turned out to be one of the highest grossing video game film adaptations of all time, so there was no doubt that Paramount wanted a sequel. And they are giving us a rather massive follow up as “Sonic 2” brings fan-favorites Tails and Knuckles (Idris Elba).
This time Sonic and Tails must prevent Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from getting an all emerald that has the power to destroy civilization. And while thwarting his plans may sound easy, it’s going to be challenging now that Robotnik as Knuckles the Echidna at his side.
Of course, with any good franchise, there’s bound to be a sequel. So it should be interesting to see how it explores the long complicated dynamics of our furry heroes and anti-heroes. And let’s not forget the other villians that have yet to appear to cause Sonic and his friends even more grief.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for the film:
The world’s favorite blue hedgehog is back for a next-level adventure in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2. After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero.
