Paramount Pictures has released the newest trailer for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” The action-packed blockbuster franchise has starred Tom Cruise since the very beginning when the film adaptation of the TV show of the same name was released in 1996. Every new installment upped the ante when it came to the stunts, and until recently, Cruise has defied the laws of gravity and the rules of life.
Now the actor returns for another go around, which could be – as the title suggests – the final film of the long running franchise. And up until “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” the films have been structured as a loose episodic installments based on missions to save the world from terrorists, then characters started to reappear in their original supporting roles or as cameos after the release of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.”
Additionally, it wasn’t until “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” that the stakes started to be raised. Characters, like Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust, vital to Ethan’s mission perished while on missions. But as we’ve seen in plenty of the other installments, there have been plenty of fake outs and characters who we thought perished have turned out to be alive.
The trailer doesn’t offer too much in terms of the story, but we know that it is a continuation of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.” In additional to Cruise returning, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett, and Rolf Saxon reprise their roles from the previous films. It makes sense to see that characters who played a major role are returning. It certainly lives up to the tag that “Every choice, every mission, has all led to this” and that “our lives are the sum of our choices.”
While I wasn’t as impressed with Dead Reckoning as some of the other Mission: Impossible films, the cliffhanger was enough for me to be interested in how the mission comes to a close.
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” opens in theaters and IMAX on May 23, 2025.
