Marvel Studios has just released the first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home. The webslinging sequel sees Tom Holland reprise his role as Peter Parker aka the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, who seems to be feeling okay after being seemingly dusted by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. While we can expect to have our questions answered about his return in Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: Far From Home will be about Spidey and how his heroism will have to adjust in a new setting as he and his friends celebrate their summer vacation by taking a tour of Europe.
In the trailer, we see that Parker and Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) embrace the “Friendly Neighborhood” surname to Spider-Man by holding community events. But as successful as these events are, Peter is shocked to see that his Aunt May and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) have gotten pretty close.
As the film centers on Peter going on a European vacation, we see him go through the motions of getting ready, which includes quick shots of getting his passport and deciding whether or not she should pack up his red and blue suit. But our hero chooses to leave it behind thinking this vacation doesn’t need Spider-Man
So as Parker and his friends enjoy some European sightseeing, the fun comes to a stop when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) appears from out of the shadows in need of Spidey’s help. There appears to be a group of new villains called the elementals who are wreaking havoc all over Europe, and it seems that Parker is the only hero available to stop them. These giant monsters, who take on the appearance of each element like Earth, fire, wind, and water, may be too much for Spidey to handle as their powers overwhelm the title hero.
Luckily, he’s got some help from a mysterious ally named Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) who seems to have the abilities necessary to fight the Elementals. However, Spider-Man fans know that Mysterio aka Quentin Beck is a Spider-Man villain who has a background in Hollywood special effects. So it stands to reason that these giant monsters are mere creations by a Hollywood special effects artist. While it is just some speculation on my part, it will be fun to see if it’s true.
The trailer also includes some shots of the new Spider-Man suit, which looks like it takes some cues from the original Steve Ditko designs. Furthermore, we get to see a new contemporary take on the Spider-Man noir suit. Pretty exciting stuff to see in just the first trailer alone.
Spider-Man: Far From Home also stars on Favreau, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Cobie Smulders, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Angourie Rice, Hemky Madera, Numan Acar, and Remy Hii.
Directed by Jon Watts, who uses a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters on July 5, 2019
