Ever since the announcement of the Secret Wars comic event at NYCC and the Avengers 2: Age of Ultron trailer was leaked, then fully released by Marvel, rumors and speculation have been flying around the internet on Marvel comics and movies.
Tuesday afternoon’s Marvel Event, at the El Capitan in Hollywood, answered some of those questions that Marvel fans have been waiting to hear about: Marvel Cinematic Universe – Phase 3.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed the films slated for release in the next 5 years, with special appearances by Joss Whedon, James Gunn, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Chadwick Boseman.
Ant-Man – July 17, 2015
Directed by Peyton Reed. Starring Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym/Yellowjacket.
Captain America: Civil War – May 6, 2016
This was heavily speculated on after the Avengers 2 trailer came out and the news that Robert Downey Jr. signed on to Captain America 3. Part of this storyline will be based on the Civil War comic that had heroes choosing a side: Captain America or Iron Man.
Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016
The movie has been mentioned for a long while, Benedict Cumberbatch has been reported to be in the running for the role of the Sorcerer Supreme.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – May 5, 2017
Too early to tell what the story will be based on or what other characters from the comic will appear. Cosmo and Howard the Duck made cameos in the first movie, so they will probably appear again.
Thor: Ragnarok – July 28, 2017
Could this be the end for Thor and Asgard? In Norse mythology, Ragnarok is the end of the Norse Gods.
Black Panther – November 3, 2017
It is quite possible that the ruler of Wakanda could make an appearance in Avengers 2 before his solo movie. Ultron’s body is supposed to be comprised of the metal, Vibranium, found only in his country. Chadwick Boseman is the actor who will be playing the Black Panther.
Captain Marvel – July 6, 2018
Another rumored character that could be introduced in Avengers 2 or Captain America: Civil War. She is a character that has comic ties to the Avengers and the X-Men, especially Rogue. Not sure who will be cast as Carol Danvers or if she will appear as Ms. Marvel first.
The Inhumans – November 2, 2018
Probably one of the most interesting of the announcements is this one. In the comics the Inhumans have been associated with the Fantastic Four, which Fox has the movie right for. They also have their origins with the Kree, which were introduced in Guardians. This could help Marvel Studios work their way around the explanation of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch not being mutants.
Avengers: Infinity War-Part 1 – May 4, 2018
Avengers: Infinity War-Part 2 – May 3, 2019
Since the appearance of Thanos at the end of the Avengers, Marvel fans all knew where this was heading: The Infinity Gauntlet. But that changes a bit with the announcement of Avengers: Infinity War. The Infinity Gems have been revealed in some of the Marvel Studio movies, which is a big part of Thanos in the comics.
It will be interesting to see what the future of these Marvel Studios movies will be after the Avengers: Infinity War. The Avengers could be comprised of a whole new team of characters. One thing I would have loved to have seen them announce is a Black Widow/Hawkeye movie. They have all the makings of a good covert action movie.
