The Launch
For many moms (and dads) Maclaren is best known for cool strollers, but the company is branching out into nursery furniture, toys, toiletries… and now bedding. Maclaren is partnering with American interior designer David Netto to launch a brand new line of crib bedding.
Officially called Maclaren Nursery (by David Netto) the launch is introducing two new four-piece bedding collections. Each collection includes a flat style bumper, sleek bed skirt and two fitted sheets.
The Menagerie collection available in either a blue/lime or orange/peach color combinations features a playful, winding design of animals and their footprints, offering a connection and contrast between the bumper and fitted sheet. And the Sea Coral collection available in either azalea pink or lime is a delicate silhouette of fan coral and abstract lines of color suggesting the sea itself.
The Designer
Netto, known as the “father of modern baby” successfully launched a luxury line of cribs and changing tables under the NettoCollection brand before teaming up with Maclaren. His work has appeared in such design tomes, as Vogue, Elle Décor and House Beautiful. In addition to trying out the new bedding first hand, I got the opportunity to discuss nursery design and the new bedding launch with David Netto over cheeseburgers last month.
Our conversation started with a discussion on how style savvy parents can find a balance with the decorative tastes of their Pillow Pet-loving kids who may want to decorate their rooms based on the Toys R Us flyer. His sage advice was to focus on the framework of the room (i.e. wall color and hard furnishings) and let the kids express themselves with the accessories. Done correctly it can actually blend well together, he says.
According to Netto, being a dad has influenced his work, especially this bedding collection. For the Menagerie design, Netto covered the bedding with African animals, but then added a whimsical Octopus among the land dwellers for those sharp-eyed kiddies similar to his own. The octopus is a nod to his daughter’s favorite character from classic Richard Scarry books.

This Mom’s Perspective
I’ve never been a fan of pastel pink and blues for my nursery bedding so I wish this collection was available when my children were babies. The bright, saturated colors and clean, vivid designs are beautiful enough for a living room yet entirely child appropriate at the same time.
The fabrics are extremely high quality. Made of extra soft 250-count Turkish cotton, I can personally attest that the sheeting fabric only softens further with each wash and dry cycle.
I received the Menagerie design in blue and lime for my son’s crib. The colors are even deeper than the press photos can express. The pure nautical blue borderlines on a deep purple making the accompanying white border of the bed skirt look as crisp as a bedroom in a magazine spread. I really love the modern and stream line design – the bed skirt is straight, no ruffling to be found and the no frou frou bows on the bumpers. Some of the other options, such as the deep pink coral are clearly a girl’s only pick, but this design could work for either gender. I only wish I could keep my two-year old in the crib longer to enjoy his Menagerie.

The two words that best describe our nursery right now are “storage disaster”! When we moved into our house, our second bedroom (now, nursery) quickly become a storage locker for DH’s family. Everyone has promised to take their items back but it hasn’t happened yet.

My granddaughter that will be arriving in July, has a beautiful green and pink nursery that was just painted this past weekend. I would choice the Sea Coral Jade, but I do like the Menagerie Spicey Orange.

I would choose sea coral jade because I love the color green and I also want to keep the sex of the baby a secret, so green is the color to go! I want something modern (not a fan of pastels either) and not too thematic (jungle animals or Disney or stuff like that). I prefer shapes and harmony of colors and textures.
