Metal lunch boxes take me back to when I was a kid. To this day I still remember carrying my Super Friends lunch box into the school cafeteria. I loved that lunch box! My family moved to another town half way through my first year in school. For some reason I had left my lunch box at school and my parents wouldn’t go back for it on the day we moved! Fortunately, I can live vicariously through my daughter when she carries her metal lunch box similar to those from my childhood.
According to Lunchboxes.com the first true kids’ lunch box came out in 1902! The lunch box was shaped like a picnic basket and had images of children at play. Lunch box designs have come a long way and Lunchboxes.com is definitely the place to go for your lunch box needs. They have a huge variety of metal, plastic and insulated lunch boxes.
Lunchboxes.com has a seriously LONG list of classic and modern character lunch boxes! The Muppet Show and Peanuts lunch box are a couple of my favorite retro designs. We received the Twinkie Lunch Box (standard size) and I’m sure everyone loves(d) hostess products or at least tried them when they were kids. This lunchbox has a retro Twinkie the Kid design and I love it. The lunch box is a good size to hold your lunch! The price is affordable at only $12.95. My only wish I have is that all lunch boxes came with a matching thermos.
Looking back, I’m not so sure why I was so attached to my lunch box. Maybe it was a comfort for me and it kept me to close to my mom. Sure, cool lunchboxes make lunch fun but lunch is also a time for refueling. Make sure you fill up your child’s lunch box with healthy foods and snacks and don’t forget to include that little “thinking of you” note from mom or dad. Parents, safety note: I read that their soft insulated (vinyl) lunch boxes have tested lead safe! Thumbs up!
A lunch box would make an awesome gift! Metal Lunch boxes aren’t just for the kids. Take them to work or check out one of the many bags, bento boxes, etc. There is also a vintage section of lunch boxes.

BTW, that Super Friends lunchbox? Check this out: http://www.lunchboxes.com/superfriends.html. $325??? This is why my parents should have gone back for my lunchbox!

That is such a cool website! There are so many lunch boxes to choose from. Your review really brings back memories. One that I can’t forget was the time I stood on my sister’s Hardy Boys lunch box and dented it! Not a good memory LOL =) Thanks for sharing!
Neat boxes! I know what you mean about getting attached to those lunch boxes. It got pretty beat up!
Wow this totally brings back memories from when I was a kid. Didn’t know they made them now. How fun!
Such a cool website! My son is starting pre-k in August and I think I want to get him a cool “big boy” lunch box!
Those are cool! I remember mine fondly too. Isn’t that funny that lunchboxes are such a big part of childhood? I love these retro lunchboxes, they really bring back memories!
Awww… my mom always packed my lunch, and I LOVED those old lunch pails! 🙂
I loved my Disneyland lunch box and thermos that I had when I was kindergarten. When I think about it, it brings back memories of being a little kid again. I even remember the smell of the fried egg and white bread sandwiches that my mom used to pack in my lunch box — it wasn’t a pleasant smell, but they sure tasted good.
I would love to get a retro lunch box for my kids…brings back awesome memories.
