Shopping for that perfect Christmas gift for the grandparents or Dad? No, not another polo shirt or “#1 Grandma” coffee mug. I recently came across Surfing Silver, an on-line shop that will take your child’s artwork and copy it onto a silver pendant key medallion (or charm or pendant, if you prefer to gift it to mom or grandma).
Kieran, like most kids, loves to do art projects. She has recently been into drawing faces. One morning she took it a step further and drew the whole body (or, at least she told me she was drawing arms and legs and hair, but it’s a little abstract). I scanned this picture, emailed it to Rita at Surfing Silver and viola!-she made a miniature replica of Kieran’s artwork on a silver key medallion. The original artwork was done with a black Sharpie (under very close supervision, I might add!) as the artist said results are best if done with this media. The process that each piece is made is quite extensive, requiring several steps and over 6 hours from start to finish. The design is actually an impression into the silver. It’s lightweight but seems strong and is only slightly larger than the size of a quarter. But what I really love, is that this is a gift my husband will see everyday, and it won’t get pushed to the back of the cupboard (a-hem, #1 Dad coffee mug…)
I recommend getting your orders in soon to Surfing Silver’s shop. If you’d like this in time for Christmas, your orders should be placed by December 5th (for US delivery). For $45 (one-sided design) the artist, Rita, will make this one-of-a-kind gift that the dad or granddad in your life will be proud to take with him. If you want to have the name or a phrase on the back, that’s only $5 extra.
Surfing Silver is an online, one-woman handmade jewelry shop where you can find a diverse collection of items as well as request custom made items of your own design. Rita is happy to work with you to make a one of a kind custom piece. If you are not confident in your own design capabilities, she’ll work with you and offer ideas and suggestions. Rita had dabbled in art for many years taking college art classes full and part time as she could. Last year she became a certified Precious Metal Clay Artist and her experience and talents culminated into her passion of working with silver and teaching classes in her community. Rita is a strong believer in the importance of families. She has been married to her husband Jim for 37 1/2 years and has raised 4 children and her 8 grandchildren ( ages 4 to 11) and all live within 5 miles of her. Every Sunday is an open invitation, and Papa Jim makes Sunday dinner for them all including his mother, making a once a week four-generation party. Rita has always felt that the present time is best time of her life, all except when the toddlers would throw their food on the floor every meal. Rita has surfed, but her husband, son and son-in-law and nephews are the true surfers who inspire her ocean themed line. The entire family loves the ocean and spends their summers taking the new generation to the seashore.

That is such a sweet idea, I LOVE it! My parents saved boxes and boxes of my artwork from when I was little, haha. This is such a cute to preserve it and make a neat memento.
