The holiday is a special time for locals and tourists to walk down Universal Studios Hollywood’s red carpet for a fabulous movie fan experience!! Universal Studio Hollywood is celebrating with Ghrinchmas that began Dec. 10th. This special event will take place daily through January 1st. My family and I were thrilled to attend opening day to experience the holidays the Whoville way. Ghrinchmas was also our first Universal Studios experience with our daughter.
Here are the Ghrinchmas events:
It’s a winter wonderland in the Grinch’s Winter Playground. Playing in snow for kids in So. Cal is a big deal! I’m from New England and have lived through some tough winters. BUT, I still enjoyed seeing the snow and how excited the kids were to play in it. What a treat! The kids enjoyed making snowballs, slipping around and just being kids! Definitely an IT spot for kids of all ages.
The Tree Lighting Ceremony was definitely a highlight for us all! The one-of-a-kind Whoville crooked tree truly is a vision! The lighting ceremony is about eight minutes long and was really colorful and sweet. I would plan your day around the show time of your choice. Lines were long! Plus, make sure you’re in the right line if you have a Front of Line pass!
Celebrity Readings take place at 5:30 and 6:15 shows. Our reading was by JR Martinez who received a tremendous round of applause from the audience. His reading was the perfect segue to the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Check out the Ghrinchmas calendar for upcoming celebrities.
A neat addition on the Studio Tour was the Whoville Sing-Along! Our stop at Whoville was fun as we watched the performance!
More Ghrinchmas activities include photo opps with the Grinch & Max the dog. Face painting and crafts at the Mt. Crumpit Cookies & Crafts Tent are also available.
One of the other highlights at Universal Studios Hollywood was the Studio Tour. This ride takes you to where the action happens and it’s cool to see the movie sets. IT’s so Hollywood! We haven’t been on the tour since the new King Kong 360/3D ride was installed and I loved it! The Simpsons ride was an exciting stimulus overload! The ride is for guests 40” and over which meant my daughter could ride. I actually prefer this ride over the old Back to the Future!
The character meet and greats, like Shrek, Curious George and The Simpsons are always cool for the kids and make for fun photo opps!
Make sure to stop by CityWalk where they’re celebrating the holidays with their own Christmas Tree, musical performances and pictures with Rock ‘n’ Roll Santa!

We love Universal this time of year! This was our 2nd year in a row going during “Grinchmas”! We love playing in the snow and seeing all the characters from the movie walking around the park. The tree lighting show is also very sweet and entertaining. We are going to try to make it our tradition to go in December every year! Fun day for kids and adults too! =)
Wow, what a great event! I love the tree, it’s so pretty! I wish we lived even around there so we could go, but definitely an idea to plan a vacation for! Thanks for the information!
