On July 8th the highly anticipated animated film, The Secret Life of Pets, hits theaters nationwide. But before that, launching ahead of the movie is the new mobile game, The Secret Life of Pets: Unleashed.
Join Max and his crew of charmingly mischievous companions, for an adventure in the Big Apple. Unlock new friends and colorful challenges in The Secret Life of Pets: Unleashed™ brought to you by Electronic Arts, Illumination Entertainment, and NBCUniversal Brand Development, available now as a free* download on the App Store and Google Play.
This all-new matching game combines strategic match-3 gameplay with the colorful personalities of the characters from the movie that will keep players entertained for hours, as they solve puzzles and traverse through New York City.
• Tackle Challenging Puzzles
Match their way through New York with the charming guide Max revealing new puzzles, pets and moments along the way. Players will get to chase away pesky squirrels with Mel or digging up super-sized bones for Duke.
• Embark on Pet Adventures
As players progress through the game and make their way to the top of the leaderboards, they’ll meet new pets including Chloe, who can’t be bothered unless there is food, Leonard, the posh punk poodle and Snowball, the insanely cute and also insane rabbit.
• Reveal and Relish Pet Moments
Make the perfect match and unlock secret pet moments including releasing a flock of helpful (and beautiful) Parakeets or triggering an exciting tile-exploding Rainbow Ball.
I play quite a few of these types of games, not to mention a few other puzzle ones, on a daily basis. This one is similar to other match-3 games, but has it’s own challenges that makes it unique and different.
The tile pieces are colorfully shaped pet toys resembling a blue bone, yellow tennis ball, orange chew ring, purple yarn ball, green star and pink heart. It took me a few minutes to get adjusted to the shapes, colors and matching combos, but once I did I was pretty much in the zone. I started playing this on June 21, almost a week into playing the game, and I’m on Level 75.
Each character has a specific board and goal: Max – reach a certain amount of points, Leonard – match the number of items indicated, Gidget – get the spa items to the bottom, Chloe – find all the cake pieces, Mel – eliminate all the squirrels, Snowball – find the carrots, and so on. The animations above the board are a bit amusing to watch when you are not looking for pieces to move.
The first few levels are pretty easy introductory levels, so they give you some basic instruction on how the game is played. If you have played a match-3 game, then you should be familiar with the game mechanics. There are a couple of configurations that might be new, like matching four to five pieces into a square to make Parakeets or matching six to form a Toy Painter Super Toy. The Power Ups, Chloe Laser Smash and Norman Dash, are available to help you get through some difficult levels.
As you progress through the levels it does get much more difficult. The difficulty factors on the number of moves available for that level plus your Parakeet/Super Toy combinations and Power Up usage. Some levels are impossible to pass without using the right combination of Parakeets and Super Toys. I did notice that the Parakeets, which are supposed to help you by taking away pieces, are helpful but you cannot count on them to eliminate the right piece. I’ve noticed that they will eliminate a piece that did not help me at all.
Some of Gidget’s levels can get frustrating to complete. Her levels are extended and moves as the items move down towards the bottom of the level to the goal. Often times there are multiple biscuit blocks that are in the way and you will need some Super Toy or Parakeet combos to break through. In some of the other levels, the cages and squirrels prove to be challenging obstacles.
Once a day you can play fetch with Max for some bonus coins. Occasionally, Max may even reward you an extra life or item. Of course, the coins you collect can be used for extra lives or items to assist you in getting past some of the levels.
It’s a fun and entertaining game, with some level of interaction with the characters. Try giving Max a pat or rub to see what he does. Love to watch Mel butt scoot and Snowball hop insanely across the screen when combining Super Toys together. The Secret Life of Pets: Unleashed is available now, free to download and play, with in game buy ins.
