Paramount Pictures has released the newest trailer for “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.” Based on the popular tabletop RPG of the same name, the film stars Chris Pine as Edgin the Baird, who leads a group on an on an epic quest to retrieve a long-lost relic, but their charming adventure goes dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.
It would be easy to write this film off, given how critics and audiences panned its predecessors and other adaptations of games. However, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves:”
Looks to take a different approach, focusing less on the gameplay mechanics or at least trying to emulate them and turning its attention to making something that is campy, fun, and embraces the spirit of the game. What’s more, the tone of the film looks to be in direct contrast with Game of Thrones. And that’s a good thing, especially for fans of the fantasy genre who want something a little bit different from the grim and dark.
And a lot of that fun comes from the playfulness and witty banter teased throughout the trailer. Then there’s the adventure itself, which feels a lot like watching a campaign come to life. Of course, it’s out of our and the player’s control since we’re made to be mere observers. But I think there’s a lot of fun to be had, especially when the group encounters a few puzzles and may accidentally trigger a trap or two along the way.
The film also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant.
Directed by “Game Night” helmers Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley, who also wrote the script with Michael Gilio, and based on a story written by Gilio and Chris McKay, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” debuts at the SXSW Film Festival later this year, and opens theatrically on March 31, 2022.
