“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”– Dr. Seuss
The world in Lorax seems pretty bad. Thneed-ville is an artificial town, everything is plastic and you have to buy fresh air. But, there’s a boy, Ted (Zack Efron) who likes a girl Audrey (Taylor Swift) and this girl really wants to see a Truffula Tree. Now, Ted wants to impress Audrey and give her a tree but there’s a small problem. Trees are extinct thanks to the Once-ler (Ed Helms).
Ted’s Grammy Norma (Betty White) is way cool and remembers the days of real trees. She instructs Ted to find the Once-ler to learn what happened to the trees. Ted goes on his forbidden journey outside of Thneed-ville to the once beautiful Truffula Valley. He tracks down the Once-ler. The now hermit lives an area that is a wasteland. A small payment is enough for the Once-ler to tell his tale about the trees. The story speaks of adorable creatures, a Lorax, beautiful cotton candy styled trees and greed. If you know Dr. Seuss then I’m sure you can visualize the colorful, imaginary landscape. The Once-ler had ambitious dreams and created the once highly profitable Thneeds. The thing that no one really needed. He needed the Truffulas for his Thneeds and began cutting them down. His actions summoned the “Guardian of the Trees”, the Lorax (Danny DeVito). Lorax warns the Once-ler of the consequences of cutting down the trees but of course, the Once-ler didn’t listen. You can only imagine what happens from there.
The Lorax is a popular Dr. Seuss book and the writers did a nice job transferring the story to the big screen. Corporate greed and environmental issues may go over some of the younger audiences heads but I’m sure they will enjoy the cute factor of the Bar-ba-loots bears and catchy tunes. Parents can discuss the film with their children and open up a dialogue about caring for the Earth and our neighbors. We’re never too young to learn about compassion and helping others. Hopefully our kids will care a whole awful lot to make this world a better place to live in and preserve the natural gifts around us. We enjoyed the movie and the 3D is stunning! There weren’t any scary scenes for my daughter. She was curious about the mysterious Once-ler and was happy to see him reveal himself at the end of the movie.
We love owning the combo packs of our favorite movies. The extras are awesome! Can’t get enough of the Truffula Valley characters? The Mini movies give you more Bar-ba-loots and Humming-Fish. Other bonus features include drawing tutorials, sing alongs and games!
