Warner Bros.’ release of the newest Barbie trailer pretty much confirms that life in plastic is indeed fantastic. Margo Robbie stars as the first cinematic iteration of the iconic doll come to life. And she appears alongside a few other companions like Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, and Simu Liu Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Connor Swindells, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
Now we don’t know too much about the Greta Gerwig-directed film since the plot has been kept a secret for quite some time. But the Helen Mirren narration in the trailer gives us a slight idea that it will be about Barbie’s legacy as we see girls smashing and throwing their baby dolls and awing over the giant Barbie.
After that we see a number of scenes featuring the beauty and majesty of a plastic and pink world, as well as what appears to be a few dance numbers featuring Gosling and Liu. The production design itself looks fantastic and the cinematography shines a lot on the sets and the wonderful costumes. And we can expect to see a lot of costumes. It’s Barbie, she’s going to have a lot of fashion.
Now I don’t know too much about the line itself but I know if it’s existence and the doll’s impact and legacy. It’s actually surprising to me that it’s taken this long for a live-action film to come about. But hey, good things come to those who wait. And after a number of direct to video cg films and a few appearances in the Toy Story franchise, I’d say we are long overdue for a live-action Barbie film.
And while the trailer doesn’t reveal too much and there’s no plot description, I suspect that all will be revealed in due time.
“Barbie” arrives in theaters on July 21, 2023.
