Netflix’s Tall Girl, which is available to stream right now, centers on Jodi (Ava Michelle), the tallest girl in her high school, has always felt uncomfortable in her own skin. But after years of slouching, being made fun of, and avoiding attention at all costs, Jodi finally decides to find the confidence to stand tall.
And she gets some support from her friends and family, including her mom, who is played by Angela Kinsey. That’s It LA had a sweet Cake Decorating experience at Duff’s Cake Mix to talk to the former Office actor about playing as a mother to a child who is bullied, her baking show with her real-life husband, Joshua Snyder, and much more.
Baking With Josh & Ange started as a fun way to connect turned out to be a great way to share their love of baking with a wider audience. Not only are the two really into it, but their three kids are into making the videos as well. Kinsey describes her passion project as an “act of love.” Her fondest memories all happened in the kitchen where her love of baking came from her mom. And for nearly three years, the family has continually put out baking videos using a variety of ingredients that cater to those who love sweets, have dietary restrictions, or is just looking to take up a new hobby. One of the biggest lessons she learned from her husband about baking was to use a timer and pay attention to the ingredients.
But turning our attention to Tall Girl, Kinsey says the film will tell its audience that it is “okay to be in your own skin, and however you are made, that is how you are supposed to be.” She loved the message of the film.
“I have a daughter, and I want her to feel that way about herself,” Kinsey said. “I want her to love herself just the way she is.” In the case of the film, all her character wants for her daughter is to embrace who she is, and not be ashamed of her height.
While Kinsey didn’t get to work with the entire cast because she worked primarily with Ava Mitchell and Sabrina Carpenter since much of her scenes were at home, she was impressed with their composure. She described the two as kind and having good manners, something that she is acutely aware of considering that she is also a mom her in her real life. She describes Steve Zahn, her co-star, and on-screen husband, as a joy, and would work with him in an instant.
Tall Girl is also a celebration of New Orleans, LA, where you feel the vibes of the diverse city through its people, food, music, and buildings. Though she doesn’t know why the writers picked that city, she appreciates that they did because she likes to see different parts of the country is highlighted. “I think it is so important, whether the movie is taking place in the U.S. or globally, the more you realize we are alike, the better off we are, right,” Kinsey said. “Whatever city you live in, we have all the same wants and needs. And that is true globally as well.”
