This weekend my daughter and I braved the weekend subway schedule catch a performance of “Jack in the Beanstalk” by WonderSpark Puppets in Brooklyn and we were not disappointed. Founded and performed by a husband and wife team (Chad Williams and Lindsey “Z.” Briggs), WonderSpark Puppets brings puppet theatre to all sorts of venues from theaters, schools, libraries, children’s museums and even personal homes.
The puppeteers were in full view and transformed their limbs into various landscapes and characters. The show is 35 minutes long and fun for ages 3 and older. The kids were absolutely entranced by the puppets and storytelling skills of the two performers.
As in the classic storybook tale, Jack trades his Mother’s cow for some magic beans, which grow into a giant beanstalk. When he climbs it into the clouds, he finds a giant castle with two huge giants inside, manages to steal the giants’ treasure and escape the castle. But WonderSpark adds their own unique humorous and creative twists to the story that entertained both the kids and adults in attendance.
My favorite part of the show was the audience participation when the giant gets the kids to help him count his bags of gold coins. My three year old says her favorite part was when the giant falls down the beanstalk.
