Netflix invited my family to the drive-in premiere for The Christmas Chronicles 2. We were excited for a festive night out and as fans of the first movie, we were excited for the sequel! We drove into the Grove and the roof top parking lot was transformed into winter wonderland. Before we parked in out spot we were treated with a big box of sweets and snacks along with piping hot chocolate! The biggest treat was the appearance of Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn and Director Christopher Columbus.
Kurt surprised Goldie with a birthday cake as well as a messages from Christmas Chronicles 2 co-stars Darby Camp, Julian Dennison and Jahzir Bruno sending their birthday wishes to Goldie. Guests honked their horn as Kurt and Goldie shared a kiss!
Russell isn’t your cherubic jolly Santa. In this film, his version is a bit sassy, a strong ego and seems a little reckless at times. He’s definitely a kid at heart! “There’s nothing more fun than playing Santa Claus, with Goldie playing Mrs. Claus & Chris writing, directing and producing the whole thing.” Russell also shared during the premiere that he dedicated the film to the “original Santa Claus” who happens to be his dad. The “greatest Santa Claus was, ever is and ever will be that would be my dad, Bing Russell, he’s the reason why I’m doing this.”
At the end of the first Christmas Chronicles we got a glimpse of Mrs. Santa Claus. For the first time in 30 years, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are together again as iconic Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles 2 gives us a glimpse into The Clauses life in the North Pole and things seem perfect until Santa’s Village is threated by villain Belsnickel (played by Julian Dennison). Mysterious Belsnickel has a vendetta against Santa Claus and vows to take away the magic of Christmas!
Part 2 picks up a couple years after the first movie. Katy (played by Darby Camp) is now an angsty teenager and is spending Christmas vacation with her brother, mom, her mom’s new boyfriend and his son in a tropical location. She disapproves of her mom’s choices and worries that her mom doesn’t have time for her anymore her. Feeling rejected, Katy plans to head back to Lowell, MA until Belsnikle changes her fate and unknowingly breaks him into Santa’s Village.
Expect laughs, a big musical feature and a bit more adventurous Santa this time around. Belsnickel brings out the reckless side of Santa as he squares off with Belsnickel. Plus, we see the influence of Mrs. Claus plus her in action as well! The Christmas Chronicles 2 definitely involves more CGI with frenzied elves and crazed hyenas!
The event made us happy and thankful and we left with a smile from ear to ear. Driving out to holiday music, and “snow” falling really made our night. Unlike Kate, I wouldn’t mind a tropical Christmas this year but one of the messages of the film is holidays are special because of the ones we spend it with!
The Christmas Chronicles 2 is streaming now on Netflix.
