Cinderella is in theaters today and it’s a must-see for so many reasons!
1) Princess eye candy. EVERYTHING in this movie is beautiful. Everything! The visuals are exquisite. The actors are wonderful. The costumes are delightful. You leave thinking about the morals and lessons in the film. The castle, woods, all of the landscapes are breathtaking. You want to wear that shoe and you will want to ride in that golden carriage … this is the ultimate Princess story.
2) Cinderella is based on Disney’s 1950 animated classic. We all know the story. I think the iconic scenes are forever engraved into our brains. Those elements are in this movie as Director Kenneth Branagh stays true to Walt Disney’s version but Kenneth does include new additions which give this fairytale a modern day feel. We learn the untold story of Cinderella who endures abuse by her evil stepmother and stepsisters but she remains positive through her suffering and loss. She’s not passively waiting for her prince to come. She stands by her beliefs and you get the impression that she would have held her own even without Charming. But don’t fret, every princess gets her happy ending.
3) Back to the iconic scenes, seeing all of those moments was fabulous! The Fairy Godmother (Helena Bonham Carter) transforms Cinderella, the animals as well as the pumpkin and it was thrilling to see live! Plus, the runaway princess scene was exciting! You know it’s good writing when you know the entire storyline but can’t wait to see what happens next!
4) “Have Courage and Be kind.” NO truer words have been spoken. All Moms want the best for their children but that’s hard to hear when your mom is on your deathbed. But those words carry Cinderella through heralding times. She over comes tragedy and remains strong while showing kindness to everyone including the ones who need it the most. Cinderella is beautiful inside and out and that’s evident even to my daughter. Being courageous and kind is something we all need to do on a daily basis and sometimes it’s not that easy.
5) Lily James and Richard Madden have crazy chemistry together. They lit up the screen while their love story unfolded. Their love is gentle, romantic and dreamy! And they seem to have a lot in common.
6) “The Dance” is mesmerizing! I’m sure a lot of preparation when into that grand scene but it looked truly effortless. Lily James’ entrance was jaw-dropping. I also enjoyed when Cinderella and the Prince first meet. This is when they first danced perched high on top of their horses. Aww, young love!
7) Cate Blanchett is spectacular as the evil-stepmother. She really stole the show. She will stop at nothing to get her happy ending. We get a glimpse as to why she’s so cranky, you can’t help to feel for her (just a tiny little bit) but I would be lying if I said that I didn’t love her burning gazes, that scowl and her sinister laugh. I couldn’t get enough and she looked exquisite in Sandy Powell’s gorgeous costumes — Perfection!
8) Prince Charming has a name in this movie as well as depth and aspirations. We see him as a son who is dealing with issues that come with being royalty. He becomes an orphan just like Cinderella. We learn that he’s athletic, has a best friend and will stop at nothing to find true love. Arranged marriages are so yesterday!
9) There is minimal CGI in this film which is a breath of fresh air. Don’t get me wrong, computer animation can be mind-blowing but it’s nice when not everything is in front of a blue screen. Obviously, there is CGI in the film since a pumpkin really can’t transform into a carriage and sadly those shoes just aren’t meant to fit anyone but the CGI isn’t distracting or overwhelming.
10) Don’t let it go! Frozen Fever plays in front of Cinderella and you won’t want to miss Elsa, Anna, Olaf and your other Frozen favorites!
My daughter and I had wonderful conversations about this movie. We discussed how we can show courage and kindness to each other as well as forgiveness. Cinderella will always be a favorite in the world of fairytales and this film will solidify that love.
CINDERELLA is Rated PG and is in theaters on Friday March 13!
