It’s good to see my children are grateful for the many opportunities they have in life. In fact, we frequently volunteer to feed the homeless, serve “Pancake Breakfast plates” and regularly donate gently-used clothing and shoes. Oftentimes, I hear Samara, my 15-year-old daughter say to her friends, “It’s better to give than to receive!” Each time Samara comes home from volunteering at a homeless shelter, she tearfully shares heartbreaking stories from her volunteer experience. Latest statistics show more than 1.6 million U.S. households with children are living on less than $2 per person daily (Pathways: The Rise of Extreme Poverty in the United States Summer 2014).
Humanitarian organizations like World Vision help tackle extreme poverty and disaster relief. Choosing charitable gifts is a popular holiday option. You’ll find more than 250 items online and in print in World Vision’s Gift Catalog (www.worldvisiongifts.org). Gift-giving donations help improve the lives of people in nearly 100 countries through donations such as; clean water, food, medicine, education, job training and small business loans, just to name a few. Last year, World Vision helped over 822,000 people around the world thanks to purchases made from 140,000 donors. Gifts range in price from $16 to $39,000, and can be made in a loved one’s name.
One of the more beautiful items that I adore is the Royal Silk Scarf ($95). It was recently added to the catalog. This gorgeous emerald green silk scarf brightens the holiday season, while also supporting the needs of children and families worldwide, especially those in the community where it was crafted. The luxurious silk is woven by Vietnam’s skilled Ma Chau villagers, who receive fair wages and sustainable income throug
h their craft. There’s more than 30 gifts that are $35 or less including items like school supplies and job training. Also new to the collection is the African Soapstone Box ($85). Much like a small jewelry box, the hand-carved, exquisite African Soapstone Box, is finely detailed and features a giraffe. The ornate box is made of sustainable soapstone and will complement nearly any décor. Donations from this soapstone box go toward the Kenyan artisans who crafted the box to help provide medical care for their families.
A general donation can go to: Where Most Needed fund: This can be a one-time gift that provides an area most in need. Donors can also opt to have a card sent in honor of a loved one. Such cards can be printed or emailed at any time from the website to inform the honoree this donation has been given for them this Christmas.
World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and communities worldwide to reach their full potential. Since 1996, the World Vision Gift Catalog has grown in popularity as a gift-giving alternative during the Christmas season. Last year, they raised more than $33 million. To order from the World Vision Catalog, visit www.worldvisiongifts.org or call 855-WV-GIFTS (98-443887).
