My two dogs are a big part of our family and I’m convinced that they know it! Sure, they are a little spoiled- we are their humans and they are our furry babies. Both dogs have been with us since they were a couple of months old. The puppy stage is ingrained in my brain. Getting a new puppy was exciting as well as challenging and at times frustrating. Just like with children, us new-puppy parents had to deal with potty training, pet messes, sleep training and teething phases. But, it was all worth it!
Fast forward to over a decade and my two puppies are now seniors. Nigel is a Yorkshire Terrier who gave me my first experience as a dog owner. I love him! He’s been with me during ups and downs and even moved across the country with us when my husband and I moved from Boston to Los Angeles. Our “little” boy recently had his sweet 16 this year. He no longer greets me at the door when I come home. I really miss that. He sleeps a good portion of the day. He’s blind and his interactions are limited. He might not be able to see us that well but he seems to enjoy our hugs and kisses. Not a day goes by where I don’t tell him that he’s a “good boy”! Sable, my rebellious alpha female, will be 13 this year. She’s a bit of a bully towards Nigel. She’s always been a bit of a grumpy dog but she’s a love-bug and fiercely loyal!
One issue that we’ve reverted to with our senior dogs is house accidents. While puppy owners are persistently training their new dogs, older dogs can suffer from incontinence where their bladders just can’t hold it like they used to. My two dogs were 100% house trained but cleaning up messes are a norm these days especially when it comes to my old guy, Nigel. I checked with my vet and they can’t find a medical reason for the accidents other than the natural progression of aging. I have flash backs to when my dogs were puppies. I was armed with pee pads and stain removers to clean up after their messes. Also, as a new pet-owner I was constantly taking them outside for potty breaks. I’m using the same tips now as I did then! Fortunately, I work at home and I’m able to take the dogs out every two hours or so. This seems to help reduce indoor accidents.
However, I’m not always home to take them out regularly. I rely on products to help keep odors at bay. We received a dog care kit which I feel came at the perfect time. The care kit contained Out! pads, Simple Solution Stain & Odor Remover, Bags on Board Fashion Dispenser and Refill Bags as well as GREEN PUPS. These products have definitely helped us get a handle on some of doggie issues at home. Plus, we can never have enough doggie bags to take outside with us!
Out! Pet Care has a launched new Heavy Duty Quilted Dog Pads, which are 50 percent stronger and 25 percent more absorbent (and the XXL size is 75 percent larger) than regular pads. Honestly, I’ve tried pads that end up leaking through and I wind up having a mess to clean up under the pad. What’s the point?? Out! Dog pads offer triple protection against leaks, quicker absorption and they include an attractant to help train pets where to go… hopefully an old dog can learn or relearn new tricks! Also, Out! Pet Care has redesigned their best-selling product, Odor Control quilted Dog Pads. Pet parents can expect improved quality and performance at the same great price. Out! Pet care products are available now at Walmart and online at www.OutPetCare.com.
The bane of my existence was cleaning up carpet stains! Another brand to have on hand is Simple Solution. They actually have four new stain and odor products- Simple Solution Urine Destroyer Stain & Odor Remover, Extreme Spring Breeze Stain & Odor Remover, Orange Oxy Charged Stain & Odor Remover and Simple Solution Disinfectant Stain & Odor Remover. These are all designed to meet every type of pet-related cleaning need, including hard-to-remove, lingering odors. Now, you DO NOT want to be the person that wonders if your house has lingering pet odors (it probably does!). Simple Solution products are available now at PetSmart and online at www.SimpleSolution.com, except Simple Solution Disinfectant Stain & Odor Remover, which will be available at independent pet stores later this year.I’m trying to be a responsible pet owner and give my fur babies a happy, comfortable life! The best tips I can give to new pet owners or owners of senior dogs is to make sure to schedule visits to the vet when things seem like they are changing for your dog. Take them out for frequent potty breaks and if you are experiencing house training issues like I am, then the right products will help.
