If you were a kid of the 90s, then you might remember The Baby-Sitter’s Club YA novels and TV show. Now the titular series is coming back for the streaming age on Netflix. Alicia Silverstone and Mark Feuerstein may be some of the headlining stars that Millennials are familiar with, the show is about the young group of middle-school friends start their babysitting business in the town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut.
I never read a Baby-Sitter’s Club book back in my day – I was more of a Boxcar Children reader myself – but I get a sense that this new telling isn’t just for the new modern-day pre-teen demographic. There are nostalgic nods in this trailer that is geared towards those who read the books. Just look at that retro clear landline phone – that was purchased on Etsy, no less. There’s a bit of everything for fans of all ages. Let’s just be glad landlines are still a thing.
What started out as a collection of books eventually went on to become a TV series in the 90s, and a full on feature film in 95. So in addition to the books, showrunner Rachel Shukert, and executive producer and director Lucia Aniello have plenty to work with in terms of nostalgia.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Netflix’s new series The Baby-Sitters Club is based on the best-selling, beloved book series that follows the friendship and adventures of Kristy Thomas (Sophie Grace), Mary Anne Spier (Malia Baker), Claudia Kishi (Momona Tamada), Stacey McGill (Shay Rudolph) and Dawn Schafer (Xochitl Gomez) as the middle-schoolers start their babysitting business in the town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut. Rounding out the cast, Alicia Silverstone plays Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer, the selfless single mother of Kristy Thomas and love interest of all around good guy Watson Brewer, played by Mark Feuerstein.
Ann M. Martin, the series author and show producer, conceived the idea of these inspiring young girls with different backgrounds, personalities and opinions that were brought together by a business venture they created and bonded through the friendships they forged. The adaptation of the contemporary dramedy that continues to champion friendship, female empowerment and entrepreneurship was led by Rachel Shukert (Glow) as showrunner and Lucia Aniello (Broad City) as executive producer and director.
The Baby-Sitters Club stars Sophie Grace as Kristy, Malia Baker as Mary Anne, Momona Tamada as Claudia, Shay Rudolph as Stacey, Xochitl Gomez as Dawn,
All ten episodes of The Baby-Sitter’s Club arrives exclusively on Netflix on July 3, 2020.
