The Snap! Digital Reading Program is a great way to help stock up an online and print classroom library, create reports to track student progress, assist in building fluency and comprehension. Each book with Snap! Includes individualized lesson plans, which can greatly reduce time spent trying to figure out how to incorporate the books into reading lessons. They offer a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction topics that include several different types of assessments as well as interactive Whiteboard activities to use with whole classrooms. I really like that if offers the option to track the progress in your classroom because you can create whole class, group and individual reports that are very easy to read. The group reports are great for sharing with administration, while the individual reports would be an a fantastic tool for parent-teacher conferences because it can show changes and patterns over time so teachers can track successes as well as gaps in learning.
The books are easily downloaded to iPads, tablets, laptops and desktop computers, so it allows flexibility in how the books are utilized in the classroom. I’m sure that students would appreciate the opportunity to review stories read via digital resources at home through the pdf versions as well.
Reading through several books at the grade levels available (K – 8), and the activities that the program includes, I found the topics engaging and the activities to be interesting at each grade level. One thing I did notice was that the vocabulary wasn’t defined; it was just shown in illustration form. As some of the words might be unfamiliar this is something that would need to be addressed in within the lessons. Additionally, this could be an issue as the assessments that are cloze-based would be difficult without prior knowledge of the vocabulary.
A suggestion that I would have would be to incorporate the Common Core State Standards, as this is the way that education is going, and it would help teachers greatly! There are several standards that were included, but they were all based on the California Frameworks.
All in all, Snap! Learning provides teachers with resources that help to make learning fun for students while providing assessments that are easy to track, as well as easy to share with parents and administrators.
