Nickelodeon will be premiering Sunny Day, a brand-new animated preschool series, on Monday, August 21.
Sunny Day centers around Sunny, her two best friends and colleagues, Rox and Blair and her dog Doodle, as she runs her own hair salon in the seaside town of Friendly Falls.
Sunny is the 10-year old master hairstylist and entrepreneur with a can-do attitude. She is confident problem-solver that is up for any challenge that comes her way. Sunny is a friend to everyone.
Rox is the 9-year old energetic color artist. She is a fearless and agile, especially on her skateboard.
Blair is the manager and manicurist. She keeps the salon in order and running like clockwork with her calm, cool and collected demeanor.
Doodle is Sunny’s devoted dog. He enjoys belly rubs and giving slobbery licks. Doodle is charming, funny and sincere, that likes to sing and dance.
When adventure calls, Sunny sets out to save the day in her salon-on-the-go Glam Van.
The characters in the series celebrate individuality and self-expression, while the show’s social-emotional curriculum highlights leadership, innovative thinking, teamwork and diversity.
There are 40 episodes scheduled to run on Nick Jr. Each episode is 30 minutes long and features a fun hairstyle incorporated into the story. At then end of each episode the featured hairstyle is highlighted in live-action. The actual tutorial for the hairstyle can be seen online at nickjr.com and the Nick Jr. App.
Main voice cast:
• Sunny – Lilla Crawford (Into the Woods)
• Rox – Élan Luz Rivera (Life with Mikey)
• Blair – Taylor Louderman (NBC’s Peter Pan Live!)
• Doodle – Rob Morrison (PBS Kids’ Peg + Cat)
The first season will also feature celebrity guest stars including:
• Ashley Parker Angel (O-Town)
• Lance Bass (NSYNC)
• Kether Donohue (Grease Live, Pitch Perfect movies)
• Christopher Fitzgerald (Waitress)
• Adam Jacobs (Aladdin)
• Shanice Williams (The Wiz Live!)
The series is definitely for preschool age girls, but that is not to say that boys of that age would not be entertained by it. I screened two episodes and thought they were very fun, cute and nicely done. Episode 1 dealt with friendship and Episode 2 was about trying new things. They were funny, have positive messages that teach friendship and a diverse cast with a bit of singing/music. The hairstyle tutorial feature is a nice touch to tie the show into the digital content and way to get the parents involved.
There will also be some content online at nickjr.com and on the Nick Jr. App leading up to the series premiere on August 21. A brand-new game, “Smiling and Styling with Sunny!,” is available. You can help Sunny, Rox and Blair with fun makeovers by styling and coloring hair, plus paint and decorate nails, for the residents of Friendly Falls as they get ready for their events.
