Annual conventions and concerts were canceled this year due to the Covid-19 virus, and many were wondering whether or not Star Wars Celebration would follow suit. Unfortunately, the people that run the event had to make the unsurprising announcement that the highly anticipated event is being rescheduled due to the ongoing pandemic.
Here’s an excerpt of the letter that was posted on the official Star Wars Celebration website:
At Star Wars Celebration, the health and safety of our fans, attendees, exhibitors, guests, and staff is always our number one priority. Due to the global impact of the Covid-19 virus and speaking with local and state authorities on the latest public health guidelines related to indoor conventions, we have made the decision to cancel Star Wars Celebration for 2020.
Due to the impact of COVID-19, we’ve made the decision to cancel Star Wars Celebration 2020. While this news is disappointing, we’re happy to announce #StarWarsCelebration will return to Anaheim in 2022. Despite the bad news, Star Wars Celebration will return to the Anaheim Convention Center on August 18 – 21, 2022.
Star Wars Celebration is an event where fans converge to celebrate the films, books, video games, and, most recently, TV shows that have shaped their Star Wars identity. Guests from all of those facets made appearances to talk about their experiences, sign autographs, and be a part of the massive Star Wars pantheon. It’s unclear what we would have seen at the event. In all likelihood, it would have been first looks at season 2 of The Mandalorian, Disney+’s Rogue One prequel series, Deborah Chow’s Obi-Wan miniseries, and more.
Those who made a pre-ordered merchandise purchase can still receive your order through postage or put in a request for a refund. The exclusive merchandise planned to be released during Star Wars Celebration will be available for purchase online in the not so distant future. If you choose to receive a merchandise credit, you will be able to use it at that time.
The ticket refund and merchandise credit request period will open on Monday, June 22, 2020, and must be completed by August 26, 2020. Those who booked a hotel in the official room block or housing portal will have their reservations canceled automatically.
Star Wars Celebration wouldn’t be the first convention to be canceled due to the pandemic. Major cons like Wonder Con and the San Diego Comic-Con also decided to call off their respective annual event this year. Other highly attended events canceled include Coachella and Stagecoach.
