Feeling understood is pretty amazing no matter what your age – on this my five year old and I can agree. We just had the opportunity to read two new books from Ruby’s Studio about feelings and I was pleasantly surprised about how helpful they were in letting us talk about an oftentimes difficult to discuss topic.
My kindergartener has had lots of new changes in the past year – a new baby, her first year in school and the loss of a close family member. On the surface she seems to take it all in stride but I try to ask her questions to find out how she is feeling. I think these books are terrific guides for parents to speak with their children in a very effective, age appropriate way and I expect to use these books regularly with my children.
“A Little Book About Feelings” and “My Feelings Activity Book” are books created by The Mother Company’s Ruby’s Studio.
“A Little Book About Feelings” is a picture book of handmade felt creatures which encourages children to recognize human emotions (happy, excited, proud, worries, curious, scared, sad, frustrated, surprised) with the goal of helping them establish empathy and compassion. The book is based on the show, “Ruby’s Studio: The Feelings Show,” and is suggested for children ages 2-6.
“My Feelings Activity Book” makes kids the author with fun, personalized fill-in-the-blank activities to explore who they are and how they feel. Through drawing and meaningful coloring activities, kids will get to know what makes them feel the way they do and how they can make their feelings change.
My daughter had a blast filling out the activity book with my help. On one page they let a child fill in the feeling they are experiencing at that very moment and then draw a picture. My daughter chose proud and then explained to me that she feels pride because she has learned to write and spell. It was pretty cool to find out she really understood the meaning of pride and feels it! This makes me one very proud mama.
