One of my oldest daughter’s first words was “snack”. It’s no secret that we love our snacks in this house, and yet I try to be smart about what those snacks involve. After a long day at school, a piece of fruit doesn’t always cut it for my kids, and so it forces me to be creative and to find other healthy (but yummy!) alternatives.
Recently, KRAFT Foods provided us with product samples of the MilkBite Milk and Granola bar as well as a gift card to conduct a taste test against other leading brands. Found in the refrigerated dairy aisle, each MilkBite bar contains real milk, whole grain, granola and other tasty and nutritious ingredients like fruit or roasted nuts. And the best part? They provide the same amount of calcium as an 8-oz. glass of milk. They also include 5g of protein, 7g of whole grains, no high fructose corn syrup or artificial flavors, and no colors or preservatives. From a mom’s perspective, this is great news; but what my kids wanted to know is, how do they taste? The answer: delicious. We tried both the Strawberry and Chocolate varieties, and we could not decide which one we liked better. The texture is wonderful, because although it is chewy, it has an underlying crunchiness that really rounds out the flavor, and I tend to think the fact that it is refrigerated adds to the sensory experience with its coolness. While the kids munched and exclaimed over their MilkBite bars, I grabbed the boxes of some of the other granola bars I had on hand and we had our very own taste test. Comparing them, I found that the KRAFT MilkBar offered more of everything than the other bars—protein, whole grains, and less sugar; not to mention that they don’t even contain high fructose corn syrup, a main ingredient of many of the shelved varieties. The taste itself won overall every time. Saying that our whole family loved them is an understatement; between lunches and after-school snacks, they were gone in two days. My girls have already asked for them again!
KRAFT MilkBars are available in the refrigerated dairy aisle, come in five flavors (Chocolate, Strawberry, Peanut Butter, Oatmeal Raisin and Mixed Berry) and retail for $3.49 per box.
