Not long ago, my debit card number was stolen and used without it ever having left my wallet or being used online. Turns out, I was a victim of RFID scanning where criminals can scan your card while it is in your wallet, in your purse and get the number. They can just walk past people with their little scanner and gather information and no-one’s the wiser. Scary stuff. Wallets that are un-scannable have been around a while but are bulky. I just tried a slimmer option that offered better options – with some limitations.
The HuMn wallet is made of aluminum mesh plates that block radio frequency signals in the carbon fiber plates. That’s two or three plates held together by a very strong elastic band. The idea is that you can put your credit cards between the two metal plates (or three), held together by the band and still use the outsides of the plates for unscannable things like cash or business cards.
The Pros are that it is small and compact and great for when you only need a few, necessary cards. And the wallet protects your cards from being scanned while being functional. Important.
The cons are that it takes some getting used to to open and hold open the wallet while getting out the needed card. For someone who only carries a few cards (or if you’re only carrying the essential ones for a night out), the two-panel wallet is a great solution. But for someone like me who carries a debit and credit card plus several loyalty cards, membership cards and insurance cards for the whole family, it is difficult to manage. I tried putting only my driver’s license and credit/debit cards in there, within my other wallet and that was an option, albeit an awkward one. Someone with a card situation like mine (i.e. most every Mom), should go with the three panel wallet to divvy up the cards, making it much more manageable. For the peace of mind, I’m willing to fiddle with making the new wallet work for me.
You can customize the color of the HuMn wallet with different color plates and bands to mix and match. The wallets come in two sizes. Both sizes start at $76.00 and can be ordered online at http://humnwallet.com/

That’s a neat little holder if you are taking only a few cards with you somewhere. Cute!
Scary about being scanned and having a debit card stolen! Wow!
Seems like a cuter version of something my husband carries to protect his cards.
That is crazy! I didn’t even know that was possible!
Whoa.. seriously? People scan debit card numbers?? Okay, that freaks me out. This past year someone got my debit card number, I presumed it was through the gas stations considering that was the only place I’d been using it at.. now I’m wondering…
