That’s it LA got a chance to participate in an awesome fan celebration for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies hosted by Hot Topic! In Hollywood, Zombiefiles, Austenites, and Whovians congregated to break the record of zombies reading Pride and Prejudice along with the cast in a movie theater. A lot of the fans were able to get their makeup done by Hollywood professionals before the film to participate in the record breaking before the film and it was an utterly packed house!
But before the record breaking show, fans were able to participate in a meet and greet with the cast. It was awesome to see people decked out in zombie makeup and also Doctor Who characters to get posters signed by Lily James (Liz Bennett), Bella Heathcote (Jane Bennett), Douglas Booth (Mr. Bingley), and The Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith (Parson Collins). Some of the fans(Whovians) walked out like they had just had a religious experience after meeting Matt Smith
who makes a hilarious turn as Collins in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
But for me it was definitely the ladies who stole the show in their awesome gowns and dangerous undergarments that concealed dangerous weapons. The film takes the basic premise of Pride and Prejudice where the Bennett sisters are of age and in the midst of getting weddings arranged to well to do gentlemen. Liz is the stubborn girl who doesn’t care to be married off and is considered to be the wittiest of the sisters who questions their roles as women to only have the function to marry. In the book Jane falls for the charming Mr. Bingley who’s best friend Mr. Darcy persuades to not propose to Jane after he overhears her mother talk about how rich they’d be when she did marry him. Elizabeth finds out that the brooding Mr. Darcy prevented her sister’s happiness and come at him mighty fierce to fix things wherein they realize they are each other’s equal and fall in love. The classic Mr. Darcy love story is amped up so much more by the adrenaline the leads have while killing zombies and protecting their loves ones, that it makes for a whole new Pride and Prejudice fandom around Liz and Darcy: Zombie slayers.
The film isn’t too scary and the gore is really toned down for the PG-13 rating. There are some jump scares but overall the film is fun for the teen girl crowd or for people who don’t like excessive violence. The violence that does happen comes from the intensely trained Bennett sisters who are more bold and relatable. The teamwork of Liz and Jane made the movie so much fun! It’s a movie where the female character engage and work with other female characters. It’ doesn’t just focus on their love stories but on the sister bond they had. It was great to see them get their men but also be there for one another. What’s also really amazing is that they were dressed to kill, trained to be like ninja Spice Girls and saved the men in the film. I wanted to be them and dress like them.
So obviously, I LOVED the Hot Topic collection for the film which we saw in the store at the event. The Austen and Zombie inspired line comes with Corsets and killer lingerie. I love the grey longline bra and ruffled panty set but they sadly don’t boast knife hoslter garters like in the film. The lace-up corset is really cool and there are sweet cameos with skull lady silhouettes. There are also cute new Funko figures for the cast as well as shirts with quotes from the film. Girls with brains will love the dead and delicious line that’s only available at Hot Topic for a limited time.
The film mashes up horror and romance in ways never before seen. The kick-ass Bennett sisters lead the film and save the day more than the guys do. It’s the movie to not miss! See it with your girlfriends for Galentine’s Day or your significant other as a Valentine’s date. It has a lot of heart and brains!
