Originally, 20th Century Fox’s The New Mutants was supposed to be a new arm of X-Men related films that had a horror slant to them. The first trailer, which was released way back in October 2017, excited fans about a planned April 2018 release date. However, unfavorable test screenings lead to reshoots. Additionally, Fox execs were worried that with Deadpool 2 being released only a few weeks later would hurt The New Mutants’ box office. As a result, the film was pushed back a later 2019 date. And then Disney acquired Fox in that unprecedented merger deal, and the film was pushed back once again as a result of working out the logistics and paperwork.
But finally, two years after the release of the first trailer, not only have we got a new one but a release date that is penned. According to this new trailer, which we will get to a little later, the release is set for April 3, 2020.
This new trailer still uses a cool yet haunting rendition of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick On The Wall, which occasionally echos throughout the trailer like a scream that no one hears. Ironically, the film features those characters, a group of mutants who are trapped in a hospital under the belief that they are there to get better. However, when the truth is discovered, they unleash their powers to escape from their prison.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Twentieth Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive. Directed by Josh Boone and written by Josh Boone & Knate Lee, “The New Mutants” stars: Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga. The film is produced by Simon Kinberg, p.g.a., Karen Rosenfelt, p.g.a. and Lauren Shuler Donner with Stan Lee and Michele Imperato Stabile serving as executive producers.
Many have joked that they will believe the film has come out until they see it in a theater, so let’s hope that Fox will stick to the release date this time around. But overall, it looks intriguing, to say the least. Hopefully, it will impress those who were worried about the film’s constant pushbacks.
The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, a mutant with the ability to transform into a wolf; Anya Taylor-Joy as Majik, a young sorceress who can teleport and use the Soul Sword; Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, a mutant who can use his own energy to thrust himself like his mutant moniker; Henry Zaga as Sunspot, a mutant who can absorb and channel solar power; Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar, a mutant who possesses the psionic/psychic ability to telepathically create illusions of her opponents’ fears or wishes. Alicia Braga plays Dr. Cecilia Reyes, the doctor whose intentions with these mutants are unclear.
The New Mutants opens in theaters on April 3, 2020.
