Walt Disney Pictures presents JOHN CARTER. Directed by 2-time Academy Award winner Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo” & “Wall-E”) and is based on the novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Rated PG-13. In Theaters Now!
John Carter is a movie that has it all. An enjoyable story line, sci-fi action, amazing special effects, romance and monsters. John Carter is an adaption of the book series by Edgar Rice Burroughs (author of Tarzan).
The story is about a former Calvary military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) now a gold prospector who finds himself transported to Mars via a mysterious medallion and an encounter with a Thern. I haven’t read the books by Burroughs but I’m curious to find out more about the Therns. Why are they the bad guys?
A Disney movie wouldn’t be the same without a Princess. Dejah Thoris of Helium (Lynn Collins) was the strong, beautiful and persuasive Princess who captures John Carter’s heart. She loves her people and wants to protect them. The interaction between Kitsch and Collins was believable and their acting was pretty decent. The visuals and effects in the movie were stunning. Especially when John Carter discovers that because of his Earthling bone density, he can jump across Mars! This power seems to impress everyone he encounters. I’m not always a fan of 3D but the effects really enhanced this film. The Marscape and flight scenes were so cool! Plus, there was some cheeky humor. I loved the line from the Movie, “A princess who doesn’t want to get married?” John Carter seems to help everyone fight their battles on Mars.
Being a Sci-Fi movie fan I could not help to compare John Carter to some of my other Sci-Fi faves. I wasn’t too crazy about some of the new Star Wars characters such as Jar Jar Binks and John Carter has some similar looking creatures. The gigantic four-armed Tharks had a very strong and poignant presence. Willem Dafoe did a great job voicing the Tharks leader, Tars Tarkas. The Tarkas creature dog, Woola was my favorite! He had speed, loyalty and was cute!
The Mars Series by Burroughs are definitely on my to-read list. I do have some questions about the numerous characters. I’m sure the books delve in deeper into their background and story lines. The movie is a combination of a subdued 300 and Xena while flying around with Flash Gordon! I can see kids especially boys 8-14 enjoying this film. The movie’s stars do provide some “eye candy” for the adults (sorry had to say it!). John Carter offers some amazing visuals and some interesting plot twists and action. I’m not sure how else to say it but this movie is just…fun!

I keep hearing about this movie. I really want to see it. I enjoyed Taylor in Friday Night Lights. He’s a great actor!
Go, see it. It’s fun and entertaining. The monsters are fun and not too frightening, the battles are very active and fun too. Love all the imagination that went into all the scenery, characters and structures.
