There is a growing inspiring movement of silver sisters who embrace the gray, and share their personal journeys of self acceptance. When I sought Asian women on Instagram who like me were ready to embrace their grays, I discovered Jin’s Instagram content. With over 136k followers, Jin’s feed is energetic, and authentic. Jin shares helpful tips on staying fit, looking good and of course, loving your hair at all it’s stages!
Tee: Tell us a little about yourself.
Jin: My name is Jin, and I’m 54 years old. I’m a wife (married 33 years), mom (2 daughters) , and grandmother to two boys. When I was 10 years old, my family moved from South Korea to the USA. I work full-time as a registered pharmacist, and I love what I do . I started my IG account Agingwith_style_and_grays to inspire women on their grey hair journey. To my surprise , I discovered a community of strong and beautiful silver sisters who encourage, love, and support each other as they grow together. They have been a huge inspiration to me.
Tee: When did you decide to embrace your natural hair color?
Jin: I was 51 years old, and getting fed up coloring my hair every 2 weeks. My biggest motivation for finally letting go was when I became a grandmother . I didn’t want to hide behind a box of hair color anymore. I wanted to be real and authentic for my grandson. I went cold turkey, and never looked back. I love it. \
Tee: What does the stigma of white hair mean to you specifically as an Asian woman?
Jin: As an Asian woman, I didn’t feel like I was losing part of my identity by going natural. Actually it was very empowering for me personally. It gave me more courage, and the strength to not be afraid to stand out – be proud of who I am.
Tee: How would you describe your hair color in three words?
Jin: My hair is a mixture of so many colors with no certain pattern, so I would describe my hair color as unique, beautiful and indescribable.
Tee: What’s the best thing about your decision to ditch the dye?
Jin: The best thing about ditching the dye is – it’s so liberating and freeing. It gives me more self-confidence and courage. I’m getting out of my comfort zone, and embracing who I am .
Tee: What advice would you give a woman who is just starting her journey, or is considering walking away from the dye?
Jin: My advice to a woman who is just starting her journey is – just don’t give up. It’s not an easy journey, but it gets better. You will be glad you did.
Tee: What is your approach to natural beauty when it comes to taking care of your hair and skin?
Jin: My approach to taking care of hair and skin is to keep it simple, and consistent. There are a lot of products out there. It can be overwhelming trying to figure out what to use and when. Find the products you like, and have a routine. Pamper yourself daily. Self care is so important.
Tee: What are your favorite hair products?
Jin: Currently I like Shea Moisture Daily Hydration shampoo and conditioner, John Freida purple shampoo and conditioner, or Suave daily clarifying shampoo. And then John Freida Frizz Ease for heat protection, frizz control and shine.
