It’s wouldn’t be much of a San Diego Comic-Con without some Marvel content. While Marvel Studios presents what’s in store for their fans on Saturday, today’s events are all about animation. And for those in attendance, they got their first look at “I am Groot,” a brand-new original animated series of shorts that follow Groot’s early days before he became Rocket’s house plant/muscle and a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
When the Guardians of the Galaxy burst into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we were introduced to a walking tree named Groot (Vin Diesel). Described as a personal house plant/muscle for Rocket, Groot is a guardian of very few words. Literally. In fact, Rocket said of Groot: Well, he don’t know talking good like me and you. So his vocabulistics is limited to “I” and “am” and “Groot.” Exclusively in that order.”
And for two “Guardian of the Galaxy” films, two “Avengers” films, and one Thor film, we’ve seen Groot in a variety of ages, from adulthood to infancy to teenager. Vin Diesel, who also voiced Groot in all five films, returns as everyone’s favorite tree guy.
As for the trailer, we get to see a Baby Groot as almost a deified figure who is both honored and feared by those smaller than him. Though he’s extremely adorable and somewhat of a lonely tree, he sure has fun being the center of the planet as he puts on fashion and dance shows.
The series is written and directed by Kirsten Lepore, whose credits include an episode of Cartoon Network’s “Adventure Time” entitled “Bad Jubies,” and an episode of “Summer Camp Island” entitled “It’s My Party.”
All five shorts make their streaming debut on Disney+ on August 10, 2022. And Groot returns for an all new adventure this year in “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.” And we’ll get to see him, presumably one last time, in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in 2023. So as you can see, there’s plenty of Groot to go around.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
There’s no guarding the galaxy from this mischievous toddler! So get ready as Baby Groot takes center stage in his very own collection of shorts, exploring his glory days growing up—and getting into trouble—among the stars.
“I Am Groot,” five original shorts featuring several new and unusual characters, stars everyone’s favorite little tree, voiced by Vin Diesel who voices Groot in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise.
