Disney has released the first trailer for “Crater.” The coming-of-age sci-fi film stars Russell-Bailey as Caleb Channing, a kid raised on a lunar colony who is about to embark on a great adventure exploring a mysterious crater with his three best friends and an interloping Earthling.
“You were born here. You were raised here. This dome is the only thing you’ve ever known,” Michael (Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi) says to his son Caleb. To expand his horizons, he tells his skeptical son that there is something outside of the dome.
Though the trailer doesn’t show it, we learn that Caleb’s father died, and it was his dying wish that his son finds out what is at the crater. And time is running out because Caleb is about to be stationed on an idyllic faraway planet. So, his three best friends Dylan (Barratt), Borney (Hong) and Marcus (Boyce), and a new arrival from Earth, Addison (Grace) encourage him to go on this journey. Along this spacey road trip, they learn more about themselves than they could ever have if they had stayed back at the dome.
“You know the best thing about roadtrips” Michael asks. “You get to leave everything behind.”
The trailer establishes the themes of friendship through clips of the misfit crew stealing before a lockdown can commence, playing lunar baseball, and more. We also get to see some of the tension that exists between those who live on Earth and those who live on the Lunar base. Some of the more emotionally powerful moments teased are when we get to see the kids bond outside of their mischief. They’re just kids being kids, but in space. And its all of the outside dangers that help bring them together.
“It’s not about where you are going. It’s about how you get there. The people you get there with,” Michael says. “You’re never quite the same as you were when you began.”
A 21 Laps production, “Crater” is directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez, who uses a script written by John Griffin. It will make its streaming debut exclusively on Disney+ on May 12, 2023.
