The “Evil Dead” film franchise has lived through numerous sequels and reboots in the past. And now the title that has terrified audiences by pushing the blood and gore to the brink returns. New Line Cinema has released a new trailer for the upcoming supernatural horror which follows two sisters trying to survive and save their family from demonic creatures known as Deadites.
The first three “Evil Dead” films focused on Ash (Bruce Campbell who is also a producer), simply trying to survive the horrors of the unleashed Deadites in a remote cabin and medieval setting. The 2013 reboot starring Jane Levy launching the franchise for a new generation by following a similar structure as its predecessor. However, “Evil Dead Rise” seems to be a separate entity as it set in a new home. A literal home. What’s more, the new film will lean heavily into the familial aspects as the tag reads “Witness the mother of all evil.”
And throughout the trailer, we get to see exactly what that means, as a sister must now protect her nieces and nephews from their mother, who is now possessed by a horrible and unspeakable evil. Of course, there are a few nods to the film that gave “Evil Dead” its cult classic status, namely the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. And we get to see how cringe-worthy the horror can be when we see a mother eat glass, and the glass pokes through the throat. Or even how someone gets an up close and personal look at a tattoo needle. And then there’s the cheese grater. I’ll never look at one the same way again. It’s all very scary and unnerving, and yet I want to watch more of it.
“Evil Dead Rise” comes to us from writer/director Lee Cronin. It is produced by Rob Tapert (“Ash vs Evil Dead,” “Don’t Breathe”) and executive produced by series creator and horror icon Sam Raimi and cult legend and “Ash” himself, Bruce Campbell, along with John Keville, Macdara Kelleher, Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Romel Adam and Victoria Palmieri.
The movie stars Lily Sullivan (“I Met a Girl,” “Barkskins”), Alyssa Sutherland (“The Mist,” “Vikings”), Morgan Davies (“Storm Boy,” “The End”), Gabrielle Echols (“Reminiscence”) and introducing Nell Fisher (“Northspur”).
“Evil Dead Rise” opens in theaters on April 21, 2022.
