Disney has released the newest trailer for “Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers.” The hybrid live-action/CG animated comedy, which is set to debut on Disney+, sees Chip (John Mulaney) and Dale (Andy Samberg) living separate lives after their successful TV show was cancelled decades ago. With Chip working as an insurance agent, and CGI rendered Dale working the nostalgia circuit, the two are mere shells of their former selves. But when a former castmate goes missing, they must find a way to repair their broken friendship and take on their former “Rescue Rangers” persona to save their friend’s life.
The new “Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers” trailer goes all in on the meta jokes of a changed animation landscape, the world of nostalgia, and pop culture itself. The differing animation renderings between Chip and Dale provide a nice contrast while also act as a visual commentary on how the storytelling medium evolved from traditional hand-drawn to CGI. Of course, the nostalgia part is undeniable. Aside from cameo appearances, the trailer also teases the series’ original voices Tress MacNeille and Corey Burton who viced Chip and Dale, respectively. And then there’s the fact that the film has created its own fan convention.
There’s also the metaness of all of it. Seth Rogen voicing a bearded motion-capture warrior and him reprising Pumba is a nice nod. But its Pumba telling the uncanny-valley character that he’s looking into his dead eyes that provides the most laughs since it’s a jab at how the technology still lacks in visualizing emotional nuance.
Other cameos include Flounder, Grumpy, and what appears to be an angry out-of-shape Peter Pan.
