If there was ever a place for wholesome family-friendly remake content to drop on a streaming service, it would have to be Disney+. The studio has just dropped the latest trailer for Cheaper by the Dozen, a remake of the 2003 film of the same name and based on the book written by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. But director Gail Lerner, using a screenplay written by Kenya Barris and Jenifer Rice-Genzuk, is more of a contemporary remake as it features Gabrielle Union and Zach Braff as parents of a blended family trying to keep everything together by taking care of their ten kids in one household.
Of course, a trailer like this would open with an idyllic peaceful Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 that’ll contrast with the chaos of waking up 10 kids and getting them ready for school. And that appears to be just on a regular day. What happens off hours and even during vacation will make amplify things. As the trailer goes on, it gives us the tiny bit of exposition of how things got to where they are now. And we get to see a tiny glimpse of their daily routines and personalities. We see dad using social media blackmail on their kids, while other kids give some cheery hostility, and then mom trying to give sound advice to those who have an eccentric fashion sense. You get the point.
“We’re not a cult,” Braff’s Paul claims. “But we’re weird. Were one of a kind all the way,” Union’s Zoey adds. And the jokes about believing there were fewer extra children or not recognizing some of them are also thrown in for good measure. And, then there are the other parents who are in complete disbelief that Zoey can hold it all together without going insane. And while there are some heartwarming moments, there will also be a few embarrassing ones like dad not being able to do a split in front of the school.
And just to be sure that this is a modern day story, we’ll also see jokes about kids bribing their parents into doing adorable Tik-Tok videos, babysitters thinking kids are talking about Ru Paul’s Drag Race when actually they are drag racing tricycles in the house, and “Fast & Furious.”
