Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is ready to smash the patriarchy with one giant mallet by taking on one of Gotham City’s greatest crime lords, Black Mask (Ewan Mcgregor), in Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Warner Bros. has released the latest trailer for the upcoming film starring the titular character, who teams up with a rogue cop, vigilantes, and pickpockets to take Black Mask down.
It’s a well-deserved standalone for the character who made her debut in Suicide Squad. Robbie captured everything fans loved about the fierce and somewhat damaged, Harley Quinn. The former Joker love interest is ready to be out on her own, and she cannot wait to tell you what kind of misadventures she will be on. And from the looks of things, it will be on a wild ride.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn):
You ever hear the one about the cop, the songbird, the psycho, and the mafia princess? “Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.
I have to say, I love the look, and the energy that Yan is bringing to this film as previous DC films were lacking a sense of style and personality. There’s action, humor, and suspense. Oh, and what looks like a musical number and a hyena in a bathtub. Hopefully, the actual film can live up to all of what is being teased in this trailer.
Additionally, WB is ahead of the curve when it comes to its rival, as it is also releasing the first female-ensemble comic book film.
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, a songstress with the powers of a supersonic scream; Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, a vengeful vigilante; and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, an officer who is leading an investigation on Black Mask.
Together, they make quite the female ensemble that will protect Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from the evil Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask.
The film also stars Chris Messina, who plays Zsasz, Black Mask’s right-hand man.
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) opens in theaters on February 7, 2020.
