Looking for a fun and unique way to introduce your young ones to sci-fi?
Here’s a book that’s so out of this world it takes place light-years away!
New from James Patterson’s new children’s imprint Jimmy Patterson Books is a new adventure for boys and girls! In Sci-Fi Junior High by John Martin and Scott Seegert, a fun space adventure awaits avid readers. Filled with laughs, the book tells the story of young Kelvin Klosmo as he navigates his way being the new kid in the galaxy.
At Sci-Fi Junior High, you can find an intergalactic base for students from every corner of the universe–no really–THE UNIVERSE. There all kinds of kids interact and meet one another celebrating all their differences and quirks. And Kelvin, just so happens to be the kid of two of Earth’s most famous geniuses. Nervous to make an impression, he sort of lies about taking after his folks to fit in and kinda claims to be the smartest kid in the universe.
So while he’s off trying to impress his peers so they don’t catch on, a mad scientist rises to power and tries to take over the universe. And of course it’s up to Kelvin to stop him because everyone depends on him to.
Children ages 8 and up will find an endearing coming of age story that deals with acceptance, learning about friendship and the fight against evil within the pages of Sci-Fi Junior High. “I suggested the story title and a basic premise that involved many types of creature students. Then Scott went to town developing the story alongside some of my character sketches. I do believe that our inspiration for Kelvin and his family is based slightly on the Robinson family in Lost in Space. Throw a bit of Charlie Brown and Looney Tunes into the mix, and voilà: SCI-FI JUNIOR HIGH.” said writer John Martin about crafting the idea.
Scott Seegert had a blast coming up with character designs to match the crazy idea but both agree that the story comes down to imparting some feel-good messages for kids growing up. Seegert on what he hopes kids will take away, “Two things: first, don’t worry about trying to impress everybody. It’s okay to just be yourself. People (or, in this case, six-eyed aliens and giant talking slugs) will still like you—at least the ones worth having as friends. Secondly, we hope kids just have a blast reading it. We try our best to have something exciting or ridiculous or weird to read or look at on pretty much every page.”
