Warner Bros. has released the newest trailer for “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.”
When the live-action adaptation of DC’s “Shazam!” hit theaters, it looked like WB started to embrace a lighter tone in the DC film universe. The film centered on an orphaned Billy Batson (Asher Angel) finding the true meaning of family through the lens of a superhero with god-like powers. Flashfoward three years later, and now Shazam! (Zachary Levi) returns, and so does his other superhero family to face off the wrath of new gods, who seek to claim what was stolen from them.
Sure, a darker and more mature tone for any follow-up to a bubblegum pop first film is predictable, but what separates this from any other superhero sequel is that, the Shazam family is the beating heart of the franchise. And that clearly continues on in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” when Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu), the daughters of the Atlas want to take the powers of Shazam for themselves.
While it may be somewhat similar to the family angle when Mark Strong played Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, a brilliant scientist who was estranged from his family, the new villains present a greater threat since they are targeting Billy and his siblings. Additionally, Rachel Zegler plays Anthea, another daughter of Atlas who may or may not be aligned with her sisters.
Fury of the Gods stars returning cast members Zachary Levi (“Thor: Ragnarok”) as Shazam; Asher Angel (“Andi Mack”) as Billy Batson; Jack Dylan Grazer (“It Chapter Two”) as Freddy Freeman; Adam Brody (“Promising Young Woman”) as Super Hero Freddy; Ross Butler (“Raya and the Last Dragon”) as Super Hero Eugene; Meagan Good (“Day Shift”) as Super Hero Darla; D.J. Cotrona (“G.I. Joe: Retaliation”) as Super Hero Pedro; Grace Caroline Currey (“Annabelle: Creation”) as Mary Bromfield / Super Hero Mary; Faithe Herman (“This Is Us”) as Darla Dudley; Ian Chen (“A Dog’s Journey”) as Eugene Choi; Jovan Armand (“Second Chances”) as Pedro Pena; Marta Milans (“White Lines”) as Rosa Vasquez; Cooper Andrews (“The Walking Dead”) as Victor Vasquez; with Djimon Hounsou (“A Quiet Place Part II”) as Wizard.
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is directed by David F. Sandberg (“Shazam!,” “Annabelle: Creation”) and produced by Peter Safran (“Aquaman,” “The Suicide Squad”). It is written by Henry Gayden (“Shazam!,” “There’s Someone Inside Your House”) and Chris Morgan (“Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” “The Fate of the Furious”), based on characters from DC; Shazam! was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck.
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” opens in theaters on March 17, 2023.
