The 94th Academy Awards aired live in Los Angeles, returning to the Dolby Theater, after having virtual and reduced capacity ceremonies in the previous years due to the pandemic. But now we can celebrate the movies as they were meant to be celebrated. And despite how the Oscars didn’t air eight of the 23 awards – like documentary short, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live action short and sound – producers Will Packer and Shayla Cowan made sure to deliver one of the most memorable awards ceremonies that honor the best of films of the year, within those parameters.
Of course, many devoted movie waters would have loved to have seen all 23 awards be presented, and we’d be lying if we said we weren’t disappointed that these artists weren’t recognized. Still, the show must go on. And with no agenda or ulterior motives, many of the hosts, presentors, and winners shared their thoughts on the current events going on in Ukraine and spoke out against the homophobic bills being passed in states like Florida.
And for those expecting another by the numbers awards ceremony would be surprised to see one of the biggest unscripted moments to ever happen on live television. Before Chris Rock presented the award for Best Documentary, the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith getting ready for a G.I. Jane sequel – making a reference to her appearance. But before Rock could finish his bit, Smith walked on stage and smacked Rock before a stunned audience.
Smith then returned to his seat, with a stunned Rock not knowing what had happened saying “Wow, wow, Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me.”
Smith then told Rock to “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”
It’s important to note that Pinkett Smith shaved her head due to struggling with alopecia.
All the Academy Award winners will be in bold and have asterisks.
