Dracula, the Mummy, and Hannibal Lecter will see you now.
The latest LA instagrammable installation opened its doors just in time for Halloween. At Madame Tussauds in Hollywood enter the Illusions of Horror, a newly transformed space inside the famed wax museum that invites a more macabre element to the area.
We recently attended the media reception for the event and got a first look at the delightfully devious exhibit. The mood was set as we entered with ghoulish goodies like Lucifer’s pizza and Halloween Cupcakes from Sprinkles. Pumpkins lined the areas as we listened to festive music while waiting for our tour inside.
Making our way through Tussauds, we were excited to see that many of the Wax Museum’s resident celebs were also joining in the spirit of Halloween. Sir Elton John had some devil horns, and Cannibal Lorde stood near the stage while The Claws added their rock n’ roll vibe to the place. I hope she wasn’t too hungry, the band looked really tasty.
Once we were guided through to the downstairs area, our tour guide revealed that the museum was actually haunted. Recently a book flew off the shelf at the gift shop, and it’s been said that Bette Davis’ eyes shift. Honestly, I’d be down to be side-eyed by Hollywood’s iconic queen. Which I must add when we walked past her in the dimly lit exhibits downstairs, it did add an unsettling aura.
When we reached the Illusions of Horror area, we were greeted by legendary horror titans: Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster and The Mummy. As a huge vampire fan, I had to take a ton of pictures when I met my maker. The garlic and crucifix wall he was against is aesthetic goals plus I could use a garlic wall for cooking. Not all vampires are allergic to garlic.
Another rad photo-op is the cozy coffin next to the Mummy, for a quick power nap.
Some of the coolest aspects of the installation are the facades that put you in the movies. There’s an amazing It Red Balloon Wall with yellow Georgie raincoats. A floating Twilight Zone door that you just need to throw a black and white filter on, an interactive Poltergeist tv screen, and a jail cell with Hannibal Lecter complete with a straight jacket to pose in.
It’s a perfect excuse to get your creep on and pose for some killer shots for your social media if you’re looking for horrifying things to do this season or if it’s your lifestyle 365 days a year. Be sure to don your deadly best for this unique trip to Illusions of Horror will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM
