As far as I can remember, Farrell’s has always been much more than just an ice cream parlor with nostalgic sensibilities. Part of the appeal of the franchise is it’s theme where restaurants are built with an early 1900s theme, and employees wear period dress and straw boater hats, and each location features a player piano. The idea is to bring back these classic themes and introduce them to a newer generation.
While Farrell’s has many classic staples like burgers, turkey and swiss cheese, and chicken tenders, the restaurant is about to put a fun twist on an already fun concept. Just in time for Cinco De Mayo, Farrell’s will be running a promotion where customers will be able to Burrito’d entrees or appetizers on the house menu, within reason of course. The idea of burritoing an order on the menu is to take that order and wrap it in tortilla. Now that idea may sounds silly at first, but when you take your first bite, you’ll be pleasantly surprised that you went with it.
Now, you can pretty much Burrito’d anything you want on the house menu. From burgers and sandwiches to salads and appetizers. Even their house specials are an available option. Of course, it would be difficult to turn a soup into a burrito. Seeing how there were so many options, my friends and I opted to turn our Swiss Turkey, Barbeque Bacon Cheese Burger, and Buffalo Mac and Cheese, and give it that Burrito’d twist.
To be honest, the only twist to all of this is the fact that whatever you are ordering is being wrapped in a tortilla. If you are familiar with the menu, then it all pretty much will taste the same. However, if you are new to Farrell’s menu outside whatever is ice cream, when you might want to give it a try.
The Barbeque Bacon Cheeseburger for instance, that is pretty much your standard barbeque bacon cheeseburger. The barbeque sauce was tasty and the bacon was cooked to perfection. However, Farrell’s doesn’t omit the bun, instead they wrap a tortilla over the entire burger itself. Again, it’s all about the concept, and the idea is a lot of fun, even though it is a burger wrapped in a tortilla, it is still very delicious. So if you are looking for something with an All-American flavor, then the Barbeque Bacon Cheeseburger is the way to go.
For something Burrito’d on the lighter side, the cold cut items are a good choice. The Swiss Turkey Focaccia has cleaner and crisper taste with the pesto sauce that provides great flavor to keep things from getting boring. They put very generous amount of turkey into the Burrito’d sandwich. When you look at it, the Swiss Turkey Focaccia looks more like a wrap because it has all the traditional ingredients of a wrap.
If you’re in the mood for some comfort food, then there is no better option than the Buffalo Mac and Cheese. Of these three items, this one would be closest to being a burrito than anything else because there is no bun or bread being wrapped around a burger or sandwich. The combination of melted cheese provides a creamy taste, and the buffalo sauce provides a nice kick. They also add chopped pieces of chicken and chunks of blue cheese to make it closer to the traditional spicy buffalo wings. For a nice crunch, fried onion strings are also added.
We finished it all off with a burrito’d ice cream sundae. That’s right, an ice cream sundae wrapped in a tortilla. It’s four scoops of two flavors of ice cream, wrapped up in a tortilla, with chocolate sauce drizzled all over, and topped with whipped cream, chopped nuts, and a cherry. Again, nothing special at first glance, but once you work on eating it, it’s a fun eating experience.
Overall, I wouldn’t say it is an experience unlike any other, but one that puts a fun twist on traditional restaurant items. So if you want to try something wrapped in a tortilla, then I suggest you go with the Burrito’d menu or request to have what you ordered Burrito’d. The promotion officially starts on May 1, and will run for two weeks.
We’d like to thank everyone at Farrell’s in Brea, CA on Brea Blvd for this wonderful experience.
