It’s a pleasure to meet you! – Eggs
On September 26th, the fantasy-comedy, 3D stop motion animation, The Boxtrolls will be playing at a theater near you! The newest title from LAIKA Films is based on the novel Here By Monsters and stars Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Voice of Eggs), Sir Ben Kingsley (Voice of Archibald Snatcher) and Elle Fanning (Voice of Winnie). I was lucky to celebrate the upcoming release as a guest of Fandango.com at The Boxtrolls red carpet premiere at Universal Studios City Walk in Hollywood!
Who are the Boxtrolls? They are the creatures who live in the gutters below the hierarchical town of Cheesebridge. The residents here are obsessed with three things, social status, cheese and exterminating the innocuous Boxtrolls. People were misled to believe that the sewer creatures are dangerous and will kidnap and eat your babies but in reality the Boxtrolls are naive, curious inventors who live a simple life.
However, the simple life, has become quite complicated thanks to the villainous Archibald Snatcher. He’s made an agreement with Lord Portley-Rind (Jared Harris) to decimate the Boxtrolls in exchange for the privilege of being an exclusive member of the cheese obsessed White Hats. Lord Portley-Rind’s daughter Winnie becomes an alley to Eggs who was raised by the Boxtrolls, and they stand up to Snatcher and “dare to be square” outside of their boxes.
A wonderful cast of actors provided superb voice acting to the film. I was excited to see the cast walk down the carpet during the premiere and I caught up with Sir Ben Kingsley and Elle Fanning and asked them about their characters:
Sir Ben Kingsley doesn’t think that Archibald Snatcher is evil, “He’s wounded! I’m really good at playing bad guys, I think we can all agree on that. I enjoy playing them because you got to find the reason why they are so aggressive, why are they so angry? Someone has done something to them. Nobody is born a villain. You choose to get your revenge. He’s (Archibald) is desperate to get into the club. He wants in. That’s the worst button to press on him.”
Elle Fanning thinks that Winnie is a good role model for girls, “When you see her at first, she’s definitely a little ratty and you won’t want to like her. As the movie goes along you realize that she has a really good heart and you respect her feistiness. She’s strong and a go-getter. She looks like Shirley Temple and she loves gory things, the opposite of what girls typically like.”
Fish, one of the main Boxtrolls in the film, is voiced by the talented Dee Bradley Baker who took a moment to recreate Fish’s voice on the carpet for me:

Thank you to Fandango for this fantastic opportunity!
And remember, “Boxes, hats, cheese doesn’t define who you are, it’s you whom makes you” – Egg. That Egg is a smart kid.
