Food, food, glorious food! Labor Day weekend is upon on us, which means that zany time of year to indulge in a celebration of culinary insanity. Get ready Foodies!! Feast on combinations of deep-fried goodies at the one-and-only L.A. County Fair. Fairgoers can delight on concoctions that seem to make sense once they touch your lips. Can you believe the L.A. County Fair has been delighting fans and expanding since 1922? Discover a wide variety of hands-on symposiums, including “Popnology,” where pop culture meets technology in NASA’s fact versus Hollywood science-fiction attraction. View the actual Batmobile (Batman Forever), Mars Rover and “Tron’s” light cycle.
You’ll find more than farm animals at the ever-expanding L.A. County Fair. At “Grinding Gears,” state-of-the-art venue, rock out to Top 40, Electronic Dance Music, and cover bands. Or, check out the talented groups performing in “Battle of the Bands.” The End of the Summer Concerts series offers the best of yesterday and today talent such as Train, Patti La Belle, and ZZ Top. Did I mention there’s a Wine, Beer and Spirits competition? Such connoisseurs can experience a bit of the spirits and other goods in the Marketplace. I was invited to attend the food preview which did not disappoint. There’s something for everyone at the Los Angeles County Fair. Vendors came together to show off their yearly favorites and a few premiered new items! Now through Sept 27.
Here are highlights from the Food Preview!
Craziest
What? Cornocopia Foods debut their Spicy PB&J Burger this year. Head over to Route 66 BBQ stand for their by far the most adventurous menu item topped with PB&J, Siracha sauce, bacon and burger. I have to admit this was a bit much for my taste buds, but you definitely get a taste of each topping.
Best Presentation
Cornocopia Foods wins my vote for creativity and presentation. Share their Chicken and Waffles in a Waffle Cone with the kids. It is loaded with chicken nuggets, mini waffles doused in Aunt Jemima syrup. TIP: bring wipes with you. Your hands, as well as, your kids will be sticky after eating this item!
My Favorite Deep Fried Item
These babies were oh, so good and new to the fair! Chuckwagon serves up 5 large slices of apple rings with a coating of cinnamon and a side of light whipped cream for dipping. The soft apple rings have the consistency of an airy donut that melted in your mouth. I highly recommend this sweet treat to share with your honeys!
Best Drink at the Fair
Head to Ricco’s for a refreshing Aguas Frescas or an all-natural Michelaguas! My favorite Michelaguas flavor is their 1st place (OC Fair) pineapple-spinach! Sweetened with Agave, this drink is free of preservatives or coloring or sugar. Delicious and your adding something healthy to your meal plan! I’m serious — you won’t be disappointed.
You Had Me At Pineapple
Chicken Charlie’s is known for it’s legendary Krispy Kreme Triple-Decker Cheeseburger but for a healthier fare order the chicken teriyaki in a pineapple. It’s beautiful, sweet and tasty and not deep-fried.
Sharing is Caring
Tasti Chips is the perfect appetizer to share with the entire family. The portion is massive (I do not tell a lie). Try Jalapeno Chips or their newest addition, Parmesan garlic chips. You might need a breath mint after =)
My LA County Fair Favorite!
Hot Dogs are a fair staple, especially for those who aren’t big on deep-fried awesomeness and they are definitely one of my guilty tasty pleasures. Pinks will not disappoint, their dogs have a nice snap to them, they’re juicy and fabulous — My dog was loaded with sauerkraut, pastrami, and bacon. It was by far my favorite at the preview! Fortunately, for Angelenos, we can visit the Hollywood stand on Fairfax, where you can have variations of the fair menu year round. Also, Pinks introduced a gluten-free hot dog bun, as well as, gluten-free sandwich wraps this year.
Other items to look out for, deep-fried corn on the cob (I prefer the grilled version), deep-fried SlimFast bar (is that an oxy-moron??), deep-fried guacamole, classic deep-fried Oreos, chocolate-dipped (fill in the blank), chicken-wrapped bacon-on-a waffle and so much more.
Join L.A. County Fair for the ultimate natural high! Drink, eat and be merry and maybe, wear sweat pants so your belly has some breathing room!
