Disney Channel’s animated TV series Elena of Avalor is about a brave new princess and her kingdom of Avalor, a fairytale land inspired by Latin and Hispanic cultures and folklore. Elena (voiced by Aimee Carrero) was trapped for many years by an evil sorceress. After she is freed, she learns how to become a good queen to her kingdom.

As a minority, I saw very little diversity on TV programs as a child. Not many people looked like me on TV shows/Movies or  even with the toys I played with. I definitely didn’t see diversity in the neighborhood I grew up with and this can be challenging for a young person who is trying to find their identity.  I appreciate a series like Elena of Avalor that gives young audiences someone they can relate to. Elena is a positive role model for young girls with her independent, enthusiastic spirit leading her kingdom in her way. Through her examples, kids can see that they have the power to change the world.
