Disney has a new Cinderella, created in live action (and some special magic). There’s more of a back-story with this version with visions of young Ella’s (played by Lily James) mother who instills in her the power and value of being a good, good person. After her mother’s death, as we are familiar with from the versions of the story we usually see, Ella’s father remarries a woman who is the antithesis of his first wife and gets two nasty step daughters in the bargain. Cate Blanchett plays the stepmother which, personally, will make it a little hard for me to hate her. Richard Madden is the hunky and beautiful prince. Helena Bonham Carter is a kindly beggar woman who becomes Cinderella’s fairy godmother.
It’s Cinderella for a whole new generation but all of us, the generations who have loved Disney’s animated version that came out in 1950, will likely love this fleshed out version too. The film doesn’t come out until March but you can get a sneak peek not only through the <snippet> but also in the December issue of Vogue magazine featuring photos of the cast in costume, as photographed by Annie Leibovitz.
Cinderella opens in theaters, March 13, 2015.
