Marvel Studios has released the first trailer for “Thunderbolts*.” The new anti-hero ensemble finds some of the surviving antagonists of the past, like Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and others, returning for a new mission that requires their unique skill set.
Based on the trailer, the Thunderbolts, aren’t exactly like the Avengers. Rather than have a group of heroes assembling “to see if they could become something more. See if they could work together when we needed them to fight the battles that we never could,” these anti-heroes were brought together to be killed by a mysterious person. These anti-heroes are former contract killers and black ops agents who aren’t afraid to take shots at each other. They then find out that this was a trap to kill them. Of course, they manage to survive and bring along a new asset named Bob – who many suspect to be the all-powerful Sentry – (Lewis Pullman).
As such, they come to find out they have a lot more in common than they originally thought. Think of the “Thunderbolts” as a team of misfits and outcasts – almost like Marvel’s version of the Suicide Squad. They are the only ones who can get the job done and operate outside of the law.
The brief plot description gives us a small hint at to what to expect from the bizzaro Avengers film while also throwing shade at the filmmakers and producers who decide to jump ship from indie films to major blockbusters. Marvel Studios and a crew of indie veterans who sold out present “Thunderbolts*,” an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) alongside the MCU’s least anticipated band of misfits.
It’s not at all surprising that the trailer makes use of the Pixie’s “Where Is My Mind?” considering the film will have its characters question the state of their reality, if they have a purpose outside of their black-ops missions, and what kind of legacy they intend to leave behind despite their tarnished reputations.
“Thunderbolts*” finally comes to theaters after experiencing multiple setbacks and being put on pause because of the writer’s and actors’ strikes.
MCU antagonists John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) also, in addition to some exciting new faces like Bob.
Jake Schreier directs “Thunderbolts*” with Kevin Feige producing. Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez and Scarlett Johansson serve as executive producers.
Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts*” opens in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025.
