The day was March 16, 2011. It was a day like any other day. We were hanging out at home, not doing much. Then I made the mistake of walking 20 feet away from two mischievous boys to do the lunch dishes. I was gone for all of maybe 5 minutes. When I walked back into the family room, I was nearly knocked out from the fumes. The little one (Thing 2) had brought the big one (Thing 1) a brand new can of Tropical Island scented air freshener. Thing 1 decided it would be a GREAT idea to spray the entire contents of said air freshener on my keyboard.
I learned several things from this experience. Never trust Thing 1 and Thing 2 alone in a room with a computer (sadly, I often forget this and have since found my monitor covered in marker, highlighter, and tape). Tropical Island scented air freshener is nice is small quantities. In large quantities, it makes your eyes water, your throat hurt, and is pretty nauseating. A keyboard covered in air freshener is not a good thing. Did you know that air freshener is slick? It took forever to clean it off and every time you typed, you’d get a fresh whiff of Tropical Island. Not cool.
When Unotron offered to let That’s IT Mommy try out and review their Spillseal washable keyboard, of course I had to take the opportunity. It’s your typical run-of-the-mill keyboard, except it is washable. You can literally stick this keyboard under running water and it will still work! No more worrying about spills, dust, or Tropical Island air freshener!
We hooked the keyboard up a few weeks ago and have been trying it out ever since. The system requirements include PC compatible, USB or PS/2 connection, Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP, multimedia sound card and speakers, and internet account and suitable browser. It features your standard 104 keys and also has 15 one-touch keys, including refresh, back/forward, email, play, mute, and volume control. It is comfortable to use, and comes with an ergonomic wrist support.
So far, we’ve been impressed with the keyboard. I love the one-touch controls and I adore the fact that my boys cannot destroy it with a can of air freshener. We even took it upon ourselves to hold it over the sink and douse the keyboard with the faucet. As much as this went against every Mommy instinct in my body, it didn’t ruin the keyboard. I was able to dry most of it off and leave it out to air dry. The best part? It still works.
The only downfall to the new keyboard is that the keys are a little stiff. I really have to smash down the space bar to ensure I don’t end up writing likethis. Although, I’m sure the keys will loosen up over time and with use. Also, it has a cord. We were used to a cordless keyboard, but in reality we never really moved it. So, having a cord really hasn’t been that big of a deal.
In conclusion, thank you, Unotron, from moms everywhere of little Things who insist on pushing the limits and seeing what happens when you empty an ENTIRE can of air freshener on a computer keyboard. I can rest easy knowing I won’t be buying a new keyboard every time my boys get crazy near the computer!
