Every year, we take our kids shopping for backpacks, and they pick out what they consider to be the coolest – “I can’t live without this one” styles. However, before long, they become nothing but vessels to collect trash, papers, notebooks and broken crayons and pencils.
Recently, I’ve noticed several of the students at the school I teach at walking around campus with something new on the straps of their backpack. I have to admit that I really like them!!! Gutzies are Velcro patches that stick to straps that very easily attach to backpack straps. The straps are in black, with bright yellow trim so they don’t get noticeably dirty – which is fantastic, considering the amount of time backpacks spend on the floor. Once you Velcro the strap to the backpack straps (which takes all of three seconds), you can affix the different characters, by simply putting them directly on the straps. The Velcro is super-strong, which is great because I’d hate for the kids to lose their Gutzy guys.
When you first buy Gutzies, (suggested price is $12.99) the box comes with two straps and two free Gutzies. You can buy additional 2-packs of Gutzies (suggested price $5.99) to add to the straps. Each strap can easily hold up to four different designs, and they can be switched in a matter of seconds. There are plenty of designs to amuse both girls and boys, including sports themes, smiley faces, foods, monsters, animals, peace signs and flowers. Although I haven’t tried, I imagine they’re machine washable – as long as you wash them alone in cold and air dry them – after all, it’s just Velcro, right?
All in all, I’m going to predict that these will become a craze in our school. They’re cute, they make a perfect gift, and you can personalize them based on what you or your friends like/don’t like. I’d love to see them come out with Gutzies with some bling, or Gutzies with letters next, as these would be HUGE hits with girls (and moms like me, who still use backpacks!).
